no. It has to be hooked to a spark plug. but for gasoline engine the thing works great.

It works by inductively sensing current in the spark plug wire so you should have no problem.

My old tiny tach could be zeroed, and then reset back to X hrs that way, think it had to be single wire not cord with 2 wires.

Just partially installed it to a new go kart engine we purchased. It worked immediately as designed/intended. When the engine goes in we will also decide on a permanent mounting location for it. Also if we have any issues in the future we'll report back, but so far happy with purchase!

It works great and seems to be tough. I have it on a wood splitter and the motor shakes like crazy and it's still going. I ended up screwing it to the air filter cover. I try to use doubled sided tape but that only held for a day. Very easy to install. It's great way to keep track of the hours for maintenance.
