I think they probably have some coating.... I bought the copper colored ones & the color is rubbing off, which I guess doesn't really matter unless you want them to stay that way. I was more concerned that the teeth in both combs seems a lot farther apart than shown in the photo. I have really fine hair & need the teeth almost touching to comb it well.
