You could spent much more on diamond stones, absolutely, but for me this works well. I bought this to help flatten my whetstones, a task for which this works well. I've also used it to get started on a few blades that were pretty dull, then finished in a stone. I've used it several times over the past couple months, & I've had no issues with it getting smooth or stones falling out as far as I can tell. I would definitely recommend this as a cheap, effective addition to any sharpening arsenal.
