If you go slow, it works well. The pipe is annealed first. Insert a little at a time and squeeze the handle, turn the piece, squeeze again, turn, and repeat until the tube expands to the desired size. Test whether it fits your chess piece and expand it slowly until the connection is firm.

Although I have only used it a few times, it actually seems to get the job done. It does seem to require a little practice, but, at least for soft copper, it seems to work very well. It feels like it is made of cast aluminum, so I don't know it can withstand hard copper, I think it's worth it.
