Is the securing lever strong? I have the plastic Spider version and the lever is quite fragile.

Q

Is there anyway you could use this with a backpack strap?

A
  • Since it will "clip" on to a belt, it should work on a backpack strap. I really not sure, all I can say is to try it and if it is not secure enough, send it back, or use it with a belt.

Q

Does this thing require a special belt, or can I use it with any plain belt I already own?

A
  • I have found that it doesn't. I have used it with a couple of different belts. I am very happy with this camera mount.

Would this work well with a digital point and shoot camera, or does it have to be an slr?

A
  • It would work with any camera. That being said, it seems a like it would be overkill:)

Is this system used on any belt or is there a specific belt it needs to be attached to?

I work in a nightclub, I bought some plastic versions of this product, went through 5 of them to be exact, 3 times resulting in my camera, lens, and flash crashing to the floor. The problem with the plastic ones is as soon as you have someone jump up on you or sit down without removing your camera then stand up they break....any little thing can do it....which means thousands of dollars worth of gear goes tumbling to the floor. Yes they have metal supporting them, but if you have hefty gear steer away from the plastic ones the metal in them bends. I loved the way the clip worked though, so finally I found a metal one, this one. I really like it. It can be a little odd at times and difficult, but much better than a neck strap or rapid strap. if you are using the plastic ones for a DSLR stop immediately and get this instead, your gear will be much safer!

This is the perfect cheaper alternative to the spider holster clip. I recommend it! Pros: 1.Top quality metal 2. Works like a charm 3. Very cost effective 4. Mine came designed to be used on the left Cons. 1. you cannot keep the clip on "always open" as the original. FIX: (however, I stuck a small screw in while it's in the up position to keep it open so I can use only one hand to lock or release the camera in the slot) 2. Does pull your pants down if the camera and lens is heavy and if you clip it only to your belt. FIX: (Fits very comfortable with lighter gear and especially if you clip it to both your belt and pants) 3. Does not come with screw to switch the protruding piece to the other side in case you wanted to wear it on the right side. FIX: (it seems that it can be unscrewed and used on the other side but you'd need something to fit in the hole to unscrew it.) Note: light with my nikon d5100 plus 50mm1.8 Heavy with nikon d7000 plus 85mm 1.8

Bought it to use on my travels to Ihla Terceira and couldn't be happier. Easy, convenient, and sturdy. Sure its a hair on the big side but I slapped the clip on my Chrome Messenger bag strap, slid it to about chest level and walked around for 2 weeks with it dangling and never once got uncomfortable. You COULD buy a Spyder Pro if you just wanted to spend 5x as much but this thing does its job well. I wouldnt mind a smaller post though as the base is, in my opinion, a hair on the large size butI supposed thats to give as much compatibility and adjustment as possible to fit a wider array of cameras. I LOVE THIS THING!

This one, really compels me to write one. I had a cheaper version of this, but it broke very quickly. Pieces started falling off. Thankfully, I didn't drop my camera. Another problem with that was that it only had a slot for belt. So, with heavy lens and body, my belt would flip inside out and sag down badly. This metal one has a slot for belt and a hook for pants. I slide my belt through the inner slot and the outer hook hooks on the top of my pants. No sagging, no belt flipping, very secure and comfortable. I also don't use the horrendously large bottom plate. I just screw the pin into the bottom of my camera. If you use a tripod frequently, then, you're stuck with the bottom plate.

This is a bit overkill for my use, but it works really well. I wanted a method to have a Yi 4K action cam with me that was easily accessible and most importantly reliable. Keeping it in a pocket was not an option. I was looking into plastic versions of belt buckles, but I did not get a warm fuzzy feeling that they would hold up even though the action cam is relatively light weight. I found this aluminum alloy version and what really interested me was that the connecting pin can be removed from the plate and used directly with the camera case since it was a standard 1/4"-20 thread. Sold! Mounting the camera upside down was more appealing than having the camera dangling in an awkward angle being connected to a plate. All of the pieces are heavy duty and hefty and as I said before a bit overkill for the Yi. I like the design that the belt needs to be fed through the buckle and not slide from the top. There is no way this is accidentally sliding off. I use a 2" tactical belt and this fit, but I had to widen the opening slightly since the belt is a little thick. I was able to make that adjustment since the holding belt plate on the back of the buckle is thinner and can be slightly bent. Sliding the camera into the buckle is quite easy and can be done without looking since the opening to accept the pin is wide. When sliding in the camera into the buckle, there is a physical and audible click that gives you the feeling that you know it is secure. I double check by giving it a quick upward tug. It hangs a lot lower than I expected and wanted, but I can live with it. What I really love about this setup is I can use one hand for removing the camera from the buckle! Great for those times I need a camera in a pinch. Removing the camera only requires me to grab the camera and use my thumb to lift the lever upward and simultaneously slide the camera out. It's pretty smooth and quick. My standard dress code is jeans and a button down shirt that I do not tuck in. The camera is visible with some shirts, but I'd rather have it concealed. Oh well. In the pics, you can see how it hangs with a shirt tucked in and how it is exposed with how I normally wear a shirt and even a jacket. Overall, this is a great way to be able to easily carry an action cam. Definitely 5 stars.

this is a knock-off of the "Spyder" product. It does what it claims quite effectively, but locks camera in groove each time. The original has a lock open feature - making retrieval a one handed operation. This unit requires 2 hands - one to hold the lever open while the other lifts the camera out of the groove. I wedged a "shim" in to lock it open and have to remove it if I do want it to lock. I guess trying tocutcost meanscuttingcorners. I would buy the original if I had it to do over again.

My first unit had a defective release latch so I sent it back. The second one is working well. 4 stars because the threads on the holes are misaligned, the latch is a little sticky sometimes etc. Sometimes you find a diamond in the rough, this time it's you get what you pay for. Any more and I would send it back and buy the real thing.

Built like a tank. Big, secure, holds the camera body at a nice angle with the lenses I've tried (mid-sized lenses). Strong enough for bigger gear. I would say "Five Stars" for big heavy gear, but uncomfortably heavy for smaller camera/lens setups.

Very solidly built product. Holds camera with ease. The pin easily attaches to the standard camera's screw mounting hole and then goes into the holster with a locking mechanism you flip to release. Now I can easily carry the camera on my waist or I can mount it on my backpack.
