The Tai Chai is a moderate gain overdrive/low gain distortion, thick and smooth sounding but not overly bassy, dark, or trebly. I really, really like it. I used it as my "fat" overdrive with an MXR Super Badass distortion for high gain, an MXR Il Torino for low gain, and the Tai Chi for fat/rich mid gain sounds. see less

This is a very versatile overdrive pedal. I use it for Classic Rock and it captures some nice vintage overdrive tones without getting "fuzzacious". Adds some bite but doesn't become slushy. It complements my tube screamer, soul food, and big muff nicely. I would order them from harshest to cleanest as tube screamer, big muff, tai chi, and then the soul food (Klon clone). It is a different sound than those pedals and fits nicely on the pedal board as another sonic option. The first song I used it on is the solo in Don't Fear the Reaper and it does a good job adding the attack and bite needed for that song.

This is a great pedal. Very warm and musical. Well built and looks cool on my board. The sound ranges from overdrive to heavy distortion. It doesn't really make it into metal territory, but will do hard rock. I put an EHX Soul food in front of it and I turn up the gain on the soul food pedal if I need more distortion. I would describe the result as a very warm and musical distortion, where a lot of other pedals can get pretty nasty and dissonant - which is fine if that's what you're looking for, just not my style. I especially appreciate the tightness in the low end. It is not loose or muddy at all. Great low end definition. Palm muted strumming is very crisp and percussive. For the price, this thing is killer. I may get another one just to have a backup.

that said, I don't like layering my distortion and overdrive. anyway. this pedal, first and foremost is LOUD. I mean LOUD. the volume on it is so much that I rarely go over halfway up, and have to have my dual amp setup (yes it sounds great, every guitarist should play in stereo), I need the volume at a safe level or it just starts to get loud. when I can, it sounds great loud and it is probably a little more than the neighbors want. the overdrive on this is good, I think it is my setup that makes it more suitable for halfway up and under drive. once it gets too distorted, the chords sound strange. I like it just a tad overdriven, which is like 9-10 o'clock MAX. that gives it a nice sound for individual notes and you have to kind of play hard to get it to distort. honestly, I keep the drive down really low, almost off, and with the volume up it has a great natural sound. for the price this needs to be heard to be believed, and the volume knob............L O U D ! ! !

Wow this is the best pedal I have bought for under $40.00 EVER. Works and sounds like a boutique pedal. No dead spots in the control knobs and no dead spots between the 12 and 3 o'clock position. I cannot believe that this pedal has been discontinued by Joyo as it plainly rocks, clean nice warm tone on the clean channel and just that added punch when using with the distortion of your amp. I have many reviews of these pedals on my music channel Elric Phares on YouTube if you want to see more Joyo stuff in action. This is a very up and coming company and don't let buying from China scare you as after all they are made there anyways. Received mine in 10 days. Vey happy about this purchase.

Very interesting overdrive pedal. It has a beautiful clarity to it while still able to growl. This is the most touch sensitive of any of my many OD pedals. Light picking and it stays clean, dig in and you get a very natural breakup. I find it likes lower output vintage style pickups for my taste. If the signal gets too hot it will overdrive too easily. I like to keep the gain below 10 o'clock and most of the time between 8-9. Tone almost maxed out to 5 o'clock to keep the original tone from my guitar as is, it thickens up very quickly when backing off to 3 o'clock or less. Volume at 10 o'clock for a nice boost. Sharpest looking graphics of any effect I have, just beautiful. I stack it with either my Keeley BD-2 or Jeckyl and Hyde and my EHX LP-1 clean boost for a huge variety of smooth natural overdrive. For the money it's a steal. Get one while they are still out there. Stupid on Joyo's part to discontinue.

Pro: The best pedal tone for which I could have ever hoped. It's like a parallel combination of Fuzz, Drive, and Boost with the right controls. It also seems to be heavily effected by the Guitar's output volume. Con: The only pedal that introduces noise in my pedal chain. This is true when I run from any of my guitars to the pedal (plugged in with a non-daisy-chained power adapter), then running on to a battery-powered amp. Results: While I completely Hate noise, this device sounds so good to me, that I still give it 5 stars and just deal with the noise.

This is an amazing sounding pedal with a huge range of sounds packed in it. I took a chance and bought it based on the one youtube video that existed at the time, and I'm glad I did! With the gain way down, it can be an awesome clean boost. Start cranking up the gain and it makes some huge crunchy tones that can cover a lot of ground! This pedal never gets muddy, even with all the controls maxed out. I've played single coils and humbuckers through this into several amps, and everything sounds good! Get this pedal, you will be glad you did!!!

I read some comments about the Tai Chi being "dark" or "muddy" Don't be shy with it. If you count on the gain to get your tone and leave the volume down to keep it quiet, you will get a pretty lame sound. Push the volume up near where you're running the drive and you'll find the good stuff. In fact, it works really well if you run the volume higher than the drive. That way, you get a boost to push your amp, and the drive is just flavoring the gain structure. It cleans up fairly well off the guitar volume, and it's happy with single-coils or humbuckers. It won't be my main OD, but it is a nice alternative to have in the tool box. (makes for a great lead tone when paired with my Carbon Copy delay) The fit and finish is very good (knocking it a little for the snappy-door-battery-cover) and even the packaging was of a very high level. Pretty awesome stuff for $32! Well done!

This is a very usable overdrive with a wide range of capabilities. It is not going to stack up against a $200 pedal, but the difference in price is not proportional to the difference in quality. It might take some tweaking to dial in a decent tone, and you can't expect it to sound amazing as soon as you plug it in. Take the time to sweep the settings to see how it reacts to your gear, and you will have a very nice, adaptable overdrive on your hands for an amazing price.

This pedal is realy good ! Because it's not an regular overdrive pedal it's unique. It acts as a preamp saturation. I have a lot of pedals (Boss, Wampler, EHX, etc) but this one definitively has a place in my pedalboard ! Using it alone you can get a cool tube saturation OD. In front of other OD pedals you increase the punch and the sustain in a very cool way. The only consideration: The tone knob at 12:00 gives you a warmer tone. I use it all way to the right to get the same tone as the guitar.

This is an amazing pedal for the price- it sounds like a lot of low to medium gain boutique pedals that cost 4 times as much, even capturing some of the Zendrive vibe. I knocked one point off because the input jack does not hold some cables very securely. Normally I'd just take the back panel off and bend the jack contacts a little bit but the back is plastic and I don't want to break it trying to pry it off.

This is a Good pedal for the price. You can get a mild overdrive to fairly heavy distortion. The tone control will take the sound from a bass/mid heavy blanket over your speaker sound to a thin treble heavy sound. Overall I'd say the sound is a little too small on it's own to compete with the big brand pedals but not a bad pedal at all for $35.

I'm a fan of this pedal. 4 stars just because it is not a "I'm blown away" pedal. It is a smooth creamy type of overdrive and is a nice contrast to some of my other overdrive pedals. I have a lot of guitars. To me, this sounds best with bright single coil pickups. I get some really nice tone from this with the Drive between 11 and 1 o'clock. The pedal is hard to find...thank you ! As others have said, the artwork is really sharp...though that has nothing to do with the sound.
