The instructions are confusing. They seem to say that you light the mantel, then put the globe on. That can’t be right! How do you set up and light?

A
  • It has a piezo electric igniter. Turn up the gas until you hear it and press the button. That's all there is to it.

Does it put off a decent amount of heat? Enough to warm up a 1 man tent maybe?

A
  • This is a light. Though not designed to be a heater, it does get warm. But has no method to flow heat. So only warm directly around the heater.

Does this thing put off some decent heat? Safe using it to warm up a small tent maybe?

A
  • Decent heat? Yes it does. While not a true heater it does take the chill off the inside of a smaller size tent. As always have some fresh air coming in also.

I have never had gas appliances that used the butane mix canisters. Always thought it too expensive. Well I bought the ultralight stove ($11 yea) and just couldn't pass up the camping lantern ($20, not as loud but yea anyway). First off, there is a lotta poop to those butane canisters. You pay more and get less than straight up propane, but they get the job done pronto. I'll be using them more to see the cost/usage benefits over straight propane. They seem well made. The bottom portion being machined aluminum and the upper parts exposed to high heat are stainless steel. The hanging chain is generous (guessing 18") and is stainless also. For it's size it puts out a fair amount of light. They say 60 watt bulb equivalent and I won't doubt them on that. I like the adjusting valve as it has a very broad and smooth range. You can go from full bright down to a nice orange glow to conserve fuel (same with the stove, jet engine all the way down to slight simmer). It comes with mantle. I did not have a problem with it, works fine. You can get Coleman replacements for it ( type 51?) just make sure the mantle has holes on the top and bottom, not the old hanging bag type from your grand dad's lantern. The top of the lantern is a small disk with two sets of hoops that go over the glass globe and snap under the lantern base. This holds the globe in place. To put this assembly back on you have to really pull down on the hoops to get them to snap in place underneath. Although this holds the globe firmly, I worry the effort to do this might chip or crack the glass. So far no problems, just make sure the globe is seated properly before snapping down. If it seems really hard, STOP, and recheck everything. If it breaks god knows how you will get a replacement. The globe thankfully seems fairly thick and should hold up. Both the lantern and stove seemed picky about the brand of gas canisters I put on it. One brand would not emit gas no matter how hard I screwed it down on both the lantern and stove. I had to remove the larger washer off the bottom to get that extra half turn before the canister valved tripped (there is a second o-ring inside the threads so no, there was not vapor spewing out all over). I knock off a star because after using the lantern I turned it off by the valve but left it connected to the canister. By the next day the can was almost empty (full when I started) and I did have both washers in place for this one. Leaked out somehow. Never had this problem with any appliance that used the 1lb propane bottle.

I ordered this mainly because I needed to replace my old and failing GAZ mountain lamp. For the price I didn't expect much but I am very pleasantly surprised. It's fairly well made and the ignition system is simple but reliable. My only beef is the gas emitter is a little short for the mantle that comes with it. It'll take Coleman #51s as well. Either way expect to spend a few minutes working the mantle to sit evenly inside the frame before beginning burn off. Also, the plastic carrying container should really be a bit larger to better protect the glass globe. Still, it's certainly worth the price and I'd recommend it to anyone looking for a compact propane/butane mix lantern.

I've used this lantern a total of 60 hours in the last month using both butane and propane (propane requires an adapter). The glass globe has distorted (melted slightly and discolored with white blotches near where the metal clasping rods touch). I just purchased the version that has the metal globe to alleviate this issue. It is bright and so far has worked flawlessly. Combined with a propane distribution tree mounted on a 20 pound propane tank this unit can run for a long, long time. Wind can cause flaring and diminish the brightness, but that's the only design flaw I've noticed. It's a great addition to your camping gear.

Like others have said, the lumen output is about as bright as a 60W bulb. Because of it's compact size, it works well as spare lantern. Good to take along as an additional back-up light. I used it on a recent camping trip, kept it running for several hours. After the campfire went down, I used it for roasting some marshmallows (not quite hot enough) and some hand warming. It was glowing red when I finally shut it down. It performed very well. Make sure you take spare mantles, I broke the original one in transit. No problem though to replace it. I keep spares under the lamp in the plastic case. The next morning I found the hanging chain had separated from the top of the lantern, probably from the extreme heat; but it can be easily repaired.

The lamp works well gives off a fair amount of light. Mantles are not as avalible as the other style. tho I expect you can use them on this if you don't mind a loose fit on the top of lamp. The company was excellent to work with my lamp had taken a hit while in transit and arrived damage and with no headache they took care of the situation and I couldn't be happier. The price is great at less than 20$ and it seems to be well made tho I've not used it for any extended time just really to see how it works. The shipping was well within reason and arrived before projected date all in all I would recommend this to a friend

I've read so many good reviews so gave it a try, purchased one and.............Its a Great little lantern for the price. It lights up on the dime with a piezo, very well calibrated flame adjustment which enables a super bright or very low light. Unlike others posting reviews the supplied mantle worked fine. The cage is minimal which if not careful packing could easily break the globe. I put mine in a small cut off sock and stored it in the supplied little plastic case to better protect it in my back pack (make sure to wait for it to cool down before storing) . Also this unit is super light at 5.2 oz (6.3 with plastic case) in comparison to my older German made super reliable mini lantern mfg by Markill weighing in at 9.3 oz (14 oz with case). This is a total luxury for a backpack excursion but its weight may be offset if you were to eliminate battery powered mini lamp, which could not even compete on the lumen scale compared to this gas fired lamp. I am giving it 5 stars because of the quality to dollar ratio. I paid 4 times the amount for the Markill 10 years ago. Lets hope it holds up and I will re-post an update after it gets some real, true tested bush craft excursion time! UPDATE: I've taken this puppy on three backpacking journeys, a total of nine days. Purchased a butane to lindal adapter and it operates great. No since in burning isobutane (the expensive fuel designed for high altitude), butane canisters are economical and works efficiently. The little lantern has been flawless and when operating on low, it does not make an obnoxious whinning sound. The globe has not broken since I have been very careful when storing. The little plastic container with a sock trick has worked well. If the globe eventually breaks due to a mishap, a cheap and reliable remedy is to fabricate a cylinder out of super fine mesh screen, which can be purchased in a grocery store such as a splash screen for frying. Also make sure to carry extra mini lantern mantles and dont try to use big ones such as the ones designed for coleman style. It does add weight to my backpack but for me, since I am not thru hiking long distances its simply simply worth having light at camp. Everyone loves it and I make my son carry the extra fuel...He he ! Overall, for the price, its a nice little guy!

I recently received my Docooler Mini Portable Camping Lanterns and I used one of them (I bought 2) the other night. I must say that for the money, these little guys are well worth the $20.00. I will agree that the mantles that come with them are junk and I will be finding a replacement. I have already dropped my glass globe :( and I am looking for a replacement for it so if anyone knows how and where I can get a replacement globe,. let me know, I would appreciate it. I would highly recommend this for anyone who is doing any kind of hiking or camping. These guys are small, ultra portable and the plastic case that it comes in seems to protect lantern and globe really well. They work flawlessly !!!

I waited to do this review until after I'd had this lantern for a while, and could use it. I can honestly report that it is great! It is small and light weight. It puts out a good amount of light and is easy to light up. The mantle wasn't hard to get on and burn. Really, I have nothing bad to say. I was concerned about the glass globe, but it has been robust and has withstood rough treatment both backpacking and car camping. I couldn't imagine using the version with the metal glabe - it would severely limit the light output. This is cheap enough, and good enough that you won't regret buying it.

this thing is great...gotta say I love. ive been looking at these little lanterns for a good while now but all of them were at a price point that I thought to be to high. so when I I ran across this for just around $20 bucks I decided to buy and it was well worth it., this little dude is made very well . all stainless . has a handy little starter which I think if it was to ever go out it could be replaced by the ones you can get for a jet boil. I really don't foresee a problem with the glass globe as it is pretty thick and has fairly soild case to protect when not in use. I don't belive it would really light up a whole campsite well as it puts off about as much light as a 60 watt light bulb which isn't bad for as small as it is. if your a back packer like my self and always looking to get lighter gear this is perfect. it uses the dual fuel . the same as my msr pocket rocket and jet boil. it well worth the cash

This lantern is awesome! Its incredibly compact and almost as bright as our old Coleman Quickstart. It uses the same type of iso butane fuel as a backpacking stove so its a perfect companion in your pack. The packed size literally fits into the palm of your hand and comes with a 'mostly' durable plastic protective case. The build quality of the lantern is actually superb, and everything from the gas knob, connector, the hanging chain, and even the glass seems like it will last forever. We've used it nightly on a 5 night camping trip and it performed flawlessly. The only negative would be the instructions for setting up the mantle as they were a bit hard to follow (because I have never done it before). I ended up watching a youtube video of a similar lantern to figure it out and that worked for me. Overall, a great lantern. You wont be disappointed, and this thing will LAST! Highly recommended!

It gets incredibly bright and can be turned very low the mantle that was included was crap I went to Walmart and got a 2 pack of #21 coleman mantles for less than $5 they work perfectly I enjoy this better than the full size lantern it puts out the same amount of light and only takes up a 10th of the space which means it's lighter it cools faster and the electric ignition is a really nice feature.

If you already have and are using propane bottles then this might come in handy. It's small but gives plenty of light. Seems rather delicate if knocked over, but then any mantle lamp is like that. Hot!
