This has been one of the best investments for us! We live two blocks from a boat launch, where we put in with our (very old & heavy) aluminum canoe. We portaged down once, carrying the canoe and all of our gear (jackets, paddles, snacks, etc), which was a total pain. We took a chance on this trolley and it was perfect for our needs! We only needed the included (single) strap, which we wound through one of the bars near the middle of the canoe and it held in place for our two-block walk. No slipping or shifting, which was a pleasant surprise given some of the other reviews. Granted, we live on a paved, relatively level street, so I can't comment on how well this trolley would work for an aluminum canoe on more rugged terrain. For us, it was a game changer. We can now load EVERYTHING into the canoe (minus the kids - who still need to walk), which means we can bring coolers and more gear (fishing anyone?!) with us. So much easier to get to the lake, and the best part?! The trolley folds up and fits under our seats in the canoe. The wheels pop off (just a simple pin to pull off), and the frame folds relatively flat. We put the wheels under the back seat and the trolley frame under the front seat. Super simple and so much easier (and enjoyable) to head to the lake with our canoe! Seriously, this is one of our best investments this year (maybe ever - especially given the price!!!!). Don't hesitate in ordering this - it's well worth the money!

So I've used this about 6 times so far, and when I can get my kayak loaded on it well, it works great. I don't have trouble with the wheels and it great aids with moving my kayak several hundred yards over uneven terrain, it also folds up nice and compact. My only issue is that I wish it would lock into an open position, several times while moving, it would fold closed, I think I can get this working better by wrapping the strap around the scissor mechanism, oh and the little cotter pins for the wheels can be easily lost, I suggest tieing them to a string so you don't lose them. If I could get my kayak to say on this without it closing in an easy consistent basis, I would give this 5 stars.

There seemed to be several concerns when I read the reviews...First was the smell of the tires. The smell was said to be very strong . When mine arrived, I found this to be true so I unboxed mine and left them on the deck for a few days to resolve the problem . Second was tire inflation. I used a bicycle pump and gauge to inflate mine slowly to about 20 pounds and I have had no problems . Third was the valve stems hitting the outside fastening ring . I flipped the tires around with the valve stems facing inside and this solved the problem ..Just a little common sense and patience and you will have a nice kayak carrier for a great price.

I've used this for several short hauls from a car to the water, but I hoped I could use it to walk a kayak farther than that. Seeing how these are designed, I didn't know if this would be suitable for a longer walk. There's no grease or ball bearings in the axles - just an aluminum tube through a plastic wheel. I thought that when walking a mile or more with a loaded kayak, the heat from the friction might build up, but that wasn't the case. I parked near a river, walked the road to a bridge a mile and a half upriver, and it rolled easily, and the axle didn't heat up noticeably. Folded, the dolly fit nicely on the back of the kayak for the float back down. It's not the ideal shape to support the hull of my fishing kayak, but when tightly strapped under the center of the boat, it worked beautifully.

I read some reviewers who said they could not figure out to hook it up to carry the kayak. I put the wheels under the front of the kayak (60 lbs.), wrap the cord on the bottom axle, up and run the top down to the axle on the other side. I pick up the kayak from the other end and push and steer from the rear. So easy I keep the Tote in the garage, to keep it out of the elements.

This kayak dolly works great for my Old Town Dirigo 12.0 and Castine 14.0 kayaks. They both sit on the dolly with no problems once positioned correctly and when they're strapped down good they don't move. Set up is very fast and easy! The main reason I purchased this carrier is when either one of the kayaks are loaded with all my camping gear they are too heavy to portage for one person but with this dolly it is so much easier especially when going around dams in the river. It also fits inside both rear hatches unassembled on the kayaks or strapped down on the top deck with the bungee cords so there's no problem carrying it with me when camping.
