  • This is a directional microphone that is designed for close interviews. If your background noise (crowd, wind, traffic, ect.) is loud hen it will be picked up just like any other microphone.

Q

If you're trying to record audio from say ~20ft away (ex. - wedding vows recorded from the audience) will this still be effective?

A
  • This microphone will work for that but the quality will not be great. In order to capture the voice loud enough you would have to turn up the sensitivity in your camera which will add in a hissing noise. It will be alot better than the internal mic especially if your using a dslr.

Will this work for a Nikon D3300?

Q

Will this unit fit any hotshoe equipped digital camera?

A
  • Yes, it should. I have used it with different on-camera mounts as well, although if you load your DSLR with an on-camera light and a mic it can get top-heavy, but the mic is fairly lightweight on its own. It doesn't hinder any movements or get in the way of shooting.

___________ TAKSTAR SGC-598 Interview Microphone for Nikon/Canon Camera/DV Camcorder Sold by: Digitalmedia01 ___________ So far I have recorded good audio. I use this on my Nikon D5100 and iPhone 7 Plus. It has picked up decent audio from as far as 30 foot, although I don’t recommend it from that distance. Very nice set up. Not quite as nice as my now broken Rode but much more affordable and comparatively I feel is a better value. ___________ I.D.      I didn't know what to expect when buying this but I'm more than happy with the results. You just need to balance it with your camera, mics, or lighting that you are using and you are good to go. My son and I made a little demo video to show you how well this works. It seems to work best while running and get rid of the sway of footsteps. While you are running with it, it seems like it is flowing seamless. As you can see we had great results with this but if you have any questions I would love to answer. I hope you found this video helpful.

    1) Setup and balancing is a piece of cake with the on board Bubble Meters. 2) Use a microphone stand during the balance process. 3) After balancing, it's all about your technique. 4) The gimbal could be ever soo slightly smoother, but with a little practice and technique you'll forget about it; especially how little you paid for it and saved $$$ to buy a stabilizer vest to expand your techniques. I've tried cheap and expensive electronic Stabilizers, they broke, stiff and "terrible". Do not over think the balancing process, just center the bubble meter and you're all done. 👍

I produce Interview style videos for a living. I use a Professional field recorder with matched stereo microphones for my primary audio track. Recently I decided to add a "camera mount" shotgun microphone as a safety, aka a scratch track. The "on camera" microphone was useless, so why not? There is nothing more frustrating than shooting a set, then finding out your memory card or drive failed and you have no audio. So, I tried 1/2 a dozen different microphones ranging from a $30 "cheapie" all the way up to the $230+ Rode Pro. So, the final decision was between the Rode Pro, and an inexpensive TAKSTAR (A brand I'd never heard of before). Evidently, the people behind TAKSTAR manufacture 99% of the shotgun camera microphones "for" brand name manufacturers like Opteka, Azden, AT and (you guessed it) Rode. To my complete surprise, the TAKSTAR SGC-597 performed 99% as well as the Rode Pro, both indoors and outdoors. In fact, when editing audio in Post the TAKSTAR track was easier to work, with since it had a more neutral range. The Rode has a very heavy mid-range push (their "trademark" sound) which is fine for family videos or making your voice sound better on amateur documentaries, but very annoying to work with in a professional audio editor. It was so inexpensive I picked up a second one as a spare (just in case) and plan to use them on all future shoots. The audio ended up being so good, I found I can easily use it as primary audio if my main system fails someday. Sure it will take a few hours to tweak/EQ, but it's a viable backup track, for practically free. My verdict, if you want an inexpensive, great sounding shotgun, this is the way to go. It's easy to use, has great sound, decent line level, and it's well built. It also uses AA batteries.

I'm pissed at myself that I waited this long to purchase this mic for my video needs. I've seen it along with the other big name products for years and only recently decided to bite the bullet on this one. I didn't expect much because I never use the audio from the camera anyway. I'll have my big mic plugged into some sort of recorder and marry the audio to the video in post. I do a lot of run and gun style shooting and sometime I don't have the chance to set up proper audio but still want better than what I can get with the cameras built in microphone. Since I've put this on my cam I honestly haven't taken it off. Even at home using it for youtube videos and other content i've been pleased with the sound come from this mic. It's been my go-to mic on my last few videos on my channel [...] Now you will pick up some background noise, while it's fairly directional you can hear thing in the area. The dropoff from the front to behind the mic is not the greatest, it just becomes more muffled. I just had to mention it. Also, I wish there was some kind of way for it to better alert you that you've left it one and could be in the process of draining your battery. I've come back to it days later and saw the faint little green light on like "oh snap I forgot to turn it off." I only takes a small AA battery but I would hate to be out somewhere using this and my battery finally go dead and not have an idea before hand. Overall, it's really just a great option especially for the price. I've had the chance to use the other options by rode and various companies and they're well worth the price, but this one is steal for it's tag. It's cheap enough to buy it, give it a try and not feel like you've "lost out" if it doesn't meet your standards. I just wish I could have told myself that a few years ago when it first popped up.

This device will look very familiar to you if you've seen or used the Glidecam products. I couldn't justify spending $500+ for one of those devices, and was pretty happy to see this on Amazon. It's very similar to the Glidecam HD-2000, but about 1/3 the price, which is great for a hobbyist like me. In use, this device is phenomenal and allows me to make shots that feel like they were shot on a track-mounted sled or drone. No more footsteps or bouncing of the video! : ). Getting set up and my camera balanced on the rig was straight-forward, but please note that while this stabilizer comes with NO instructions whatsoever, there are a ton of youtube videos on how to get Glidecams/Stabilizers set up, and how to effectively use them. From unboxing to full setup took me about 20min. Although the stabilizer doesn't sound like it's heavy (mine was ~4lbs without camera), if you've got a full-frame camera with a high-end zoom lens (like my 24-70mm), this is going to be one heavy beast to hold. My tip on comfortably holding this for a long time would be to hold the handle completely perpendicular to the ground, and rest your elbow to your waist/stomach as you're making your shot (as apposed to holding the whole right in front of you with your arms straight out). Then the only hard part will be using your other hand to manipulate the rig to keep your camera pointed towards your scene. Overall, VERY nice upgrade to make your moving videos very smooth without burdensome (and expensive) gear. Best of all, the price is just right for me, since I just do videos as a hobby.

I recommend to watch the video how to set up steadicam. When doing the setup or when you are not using it during your shoot, to leave it on a regular light stand. Nicely built. Feels very solid. I did go with the carbon fiber for weight and because I like carbon fiber. Overall, this does provide a pretty smooth stable image after getting all the adjustments. It is tough to balance. It takes practice. I think the price is good for people who do not want to spend a lot of money on steadycam. Just keep in mind it's not a magic tool and requires quite a lot of work on your side.

Let's face it, in camera microphones leave a lot to be desired. With the video quality of todays DSLR's you really want the sound to be as impressive as the images. Enter the Takstar 598. Not quite Hollywood levels of sound quality but way better than the in camera mic. Let's take a look at it, shall we? First, the unboxing... worth mentioning because this thing comes in a nice package. Much nicer than anything you'd expect from say, Best Buy. With it's contoured foam liner and individual compartments for each item, the original box makes the best storage place for the mic when it's not in use. Inside those contoured compartments you'll find a velvet storage bag, instructions, spare vibration isolators, a battery, mic cover, and the mic itself. Second, the mic... Out of the box the mic itself appears to be constructed as well or even better than you'd expect. The foam cover slips over the shotgun snugly, the mic attaches to the shockmount frame via small rubber isolator bands, the frame attaches to the hot shoe mount via a small tension knob and a nice curled cord with a 2.5mm jack plugs into the camera. Worth noting... a number of people have stated the mic didn't fit their hot shoe mount... you may have to screw the tension knob up towards the mic frame so the mount can slip into the hot shoe. Then screw the knob back down to secure it to the hot shoe! ...much easier than returning the mic because it "didn't fit"! Third, the buttons!... inserting the supplied battery and flicking the power switch on the side of the mic illuminates a green power light so you know the mic is on. Also on the side of the mic is a 10 decibel sound boost and a high pass filter to block low frequency sounds. Fourth, my opinion!... I like the Takstar 598. it was well worth the $30 bucks or so that it cost as my in camera mic picked up way to much background noise (non directional mic's do that). The Takstar is a directional mic so sounds coming from the sides or back is heavily muted compared to the sounds coming from directly in front of it. The battery has lasted nearly 40 hours of being "on" over the course of a few months so it's not like you have to worry about it chewing through batteries, which is nice. Fifth, my only complaints are... The sound comes across quite muted, so you either have to be close to the mic or project your voice more than you would in normal conversation... turning on the +10 boost does amplify the sound to the camera, but not without a noticeable increase in noise and hiss. Also. the low frequency filter is designed to cut out bass heavy sounds but I found it cut into the vocal range making those on camera sound hollow and tinny when it's turned on. Lastly, and most importantly I think... the power light is located on the back of the mic, there really should be one on the front so if the mic looses power or you forget to turn it on (that's happened!) You'd know before loosing an entire recording. Overall, I would definitely recommend this mic to anyone looking for their first upgrade away from their in camera mic. Experienced videographers and professional cameramen having experience with better mics might likely find it less than impressive, but if they can show a better mic for $30 bucks I'd like to see it!

The SGC-598 Photography Interview Shotgun MIC Microphone is a low cost and high quality microphone to be used with DSLR cameras like the Canon or the Nikon. The SGC-598 at this price point turns out to be an excellent value. The unit is made of an all plastic body, with a shock-resistant mechanical noise reducing mount, also made of plastic. The mount has rubber bands to help reduce the noise even more. A extra pack of bands comes with the unit, a nice touch for a low cost unit. The mic is fairly sensitive compared to a few other mics I've tried, and comes with a +10dB enhancement and a 200hz low-frequency option, which are great if you decide to use a wind muff with your unit. I've also purchased the MegaGear Microphone Wind Muff, to help me when I'm shooting wildlife. With the extra enhancement on the SGC-598 they work very well together. I'm a bit concerned about the all plastic camera foot, that appears to be very easy to break, also the 3.5mm adapter cord plug is a bit short for what I need it for. This unit needs a single AA battery to operate. For the price this is an excellent value. Not made of super high quality parts, but for the price you really can't beat it.

I'm not using this item for extravagant purposes. It captures crisp audio for basic applications. To provide an idea of the sensativity of the electronics in this condenser: In a hardwood room 12x30 with some furnishing, you can hear a conversation at the far end of the room. (The audio quality reflects the distance, but the audio is recorded) There's a plastic thumb wheel that cinches the Mic to the standard steel rails on the dslr. The Mic takes 1AA battery (Which is provided in the package) The box the mic came in can be used for secure transport, as well. There is sufficient foam padding to endure minor bumps and unabusive handling.

The microphone was packed appropriately and came in time. The reviews I had read prior to the purchase were mostly positive, but did have a few negative remarks. I was therefore a bit skeptical; however, it turned out to be pretty good for my purpose. It recorded videos with clear voice recordings using my Nikon D7000. The Takstar is relatively inexpensive compared to other name brands, but I have been happy with its performance. I haven't done too many experiments yet, but for normal recordings with the object ahead of the camera and the camera being on a stand, the results have been outstanding. I strongly recommend it to others with similar needs.

This was my first DSLR Microphone I bought and I am satisfied with my purchase based on the price. I watched a YouTube review comparing this to a RODE mic, and with the price difference, there was not a vast drop in quality (from what I interpreted) from the RODE to this guy, so I trusted the video and got it. As described and pictured, there are three switches on the device, a 3.5mm jack, a battery cover, and the removable dead-cat/wind resistor. The switches are well built and you know when they are on. This takes 1 AA battery and I haven't needed to change it yet. You plug the mic jack into your camera (mine being a Nikon D3200) and make sure the POWER switch on the mic itself is on, and you're in business. There is a bass filter switch that can try and reduce ambient noise (if you want an audio test video I can whip one up if you're unable to find someone on YouTube who has already done it). I just leave that one on. The other switch raises the dB level by 10, boosting it. I leave this off because sometimes my talent can blow or spike the audio, but it can be useful for shooting from afar. Then the last switch is power, which must be on in order to use it. IF THE MIC IS PLUGGED INTO THE CAMERA BUT NOT SWITCHED ON (At least on my camera), it will NOT record ANY audio, not even the on-board mic on the DSLR/whatever camera you use. So either unplug the Shotgun mic and use on-board, or don't forget to switch it ON (And there's a green LED that tells you it is on/battery life when red). The coiled 3.5mm cord is not long so don't expect to be stretching it very far. It works perfect for a DSLR and still has some slack which is nice. There is a shoe/hot mount to attach to your DLSR with a spinning ring that secures it in place, very useful. The mic itself is slightly suspended from the apparatus connecting it to the camera, for shock resistance I assume, but I notice nothing incredible about this. The windproof "sock" over the mic itself is decent at best, so if you have a better one, just throw it on there since the factory one is removable. The one thing I noticed about the mic is that despite it having its own power source (the AA battery), it DOES drain your camera's battery quite a bit, so be careful and bring your charger/extra batteries for the camera. For a starter shotgun mic, it's fantastic and does the job. I've used it in short films, professional interviews and filming a comedy stage show. If you want a cheap, good quality mic and are not looking to dish the $200 for a RODE, this is very good and worth the price. If you have any questions, let me know! I've had this since Feb. and I've run into no other problems but will list any if I do!

I am kinda new to video with my DSLR and had read a lot of reviews of different mikes, pros and cons. I bought the Takstar because of the price and I wasn't sure if doing videos was what I wanted to explore. I went to a motorcycle dirt track race and was very surprised with the audio in a good sense. Because it is a directional mike sounds to the side are less and straight ahead is where it is at. Reviews said the effective range is maybe 12-15 feet for voices. In time I probably will upgrade but for now I am very happy withe results.

This is a great mic for the price and for starting out. I didn't need anything fancy so this is perfect. I bought it as an alternative for the built-in audio on my Canon t3i and it's great. When I first used it there was a LOT of hissing noise coming through even when my environment was silent. I watched a youtube video and learned the noise was coming from the camera, not the mic. I only needed to adjust some settings on my camera and it was significantly lower. I live on a very busy street and the mic picks up some of the sounds but it really isn't a big deal for me.
