I bought these for bike rides. My feet get a little chilly. I tried them out by themselves, and the heating wire didn't feel especially warm - but that seemed to be because there wasn't enough insulation to keep the heat in. Once I put on my shoes, I could feel the toasty warm. They are designed to be worn with shoes. I think if they were any stronger, they would risk getting too warm, and that's why they are mild. It also makes the battery last longer. So, all in all, they seem good for outdoor activities.

My ski boots are very tight and hard to get into so I use these to warm them up in the morning. That is the reason I bought them. I wear them as socks too on very cold days when I don't ski. They are too thick for me to use as ski socks but I think they are great heated socks.
