When choosing music players like the XDUOO X3, the goal is not to get the best type out there as that will cost you upwards of two hundred dollars. The goal is to get a music player that will satisfy the basic purposes of a standalone music player, which is to offer good and balanced sound with an incentive quality enough to make you move from listening to music on your smartphone to slugging it out on a separate device. Dear reader, that’s exactly what the XDUOO X3 does. And while there are a million (ok, I’m exaggerating, maybe a thousand) others out there that offer the same features as the XDUOO X3, none of them comes close to the price-to-feature ratio of the XDUOO X3. At a price less than $80, the XDUOO X3 is simply it.

If I was basing this on just the sound quality then I would give 5 stars. Flac files play with amazing clarity and for a small device it can really punch up the volume. Recently listened to a track on my old ipod and was amazed just how poor the sound quality was in comparison, so considering the price the Xduoo is the clear winner. Battery is great too. Listen to mine on my commute (about an hour each way door to door) and seems like I only need to charge once, maybe twice a week. The downside is that the screen can be difficult to see in bright sunlight and scratches quite easily. There is no case readily available, so mine is already looking a bit bruised. Based on the sound, I will not be returning to an i-pod anytime soon.

Expectations were not high at such a low price, until I played a HD-FLAC music track, (yes you do need half decent headphones), the sound was amazing. No over powering Bass, no squealing treble, just good natural sound. I played a CD and the same track on the X3 on my HIFI, I don't need to tell you which sounded better. Expectations exceeded! If, like me you are just about to dip your toes into Hi Def audio, you will not be disappointed by this player. OK, it has no bells, knobs and whistles, it has great sounding music. Memory needs to be brought separately, but at Amazon prices it sure is cheap enough.

Decided to try something different after my disappointments with the recent Sansa stuff (The Clip & Jam etc are just too small and fiddly and not well made). Have always had music on the go as a separate device, first thing to note is its 2 micro SD slots; I'd never buy a player with fixed internal memory only, so two micro SD slots instead of the usual one is great. The player is solid, feels like a small smooth slab, and has nicely spaced physical buttons for the main controls, the kind of thing I appreciate as I can reach into my pocket and skip/restart a track, adjust volume, pause without having to take the unit out. Sound quality is very good; you get no headphones with the unit which is unusual, but then again I never use the supplied headphones with any device I've bought, always used my Sony ones. I would give this unit 5 stars but I knock off a star for a) its battery life, which is not as good as most players I've had and b) it would have been nice to have supplied a carry case or some kind of belt clip you could attach, which is something again I would have appreciated. The packaging also says the display is viewable in any lighting scenario - not true, as any kind of glare renders it almost invisible. One other aspect about the battery is that it looks as if it can be replaced. Looking inside reveals it is a rectangular (73mm x 37mm x 5mm) 3.7v 2000mAh battery, secured inside the rear cover and attached to the main PCB with a 2-pin connector. The battery is fitted with overcharge protection on one end (which accounts for 6mm of the length) and I have found a few on ebay for GPS units, but they are only 1250mAh. So options may be limited. As for the interface, it is a bit basic, however I decided to download and install the Rockbox firmware you can get, as mentioned by other reviewers. This does open up the unit for much more customisation, such as equalisers, bass, treble and hosts of other things. One word of information though; the Rockbox firmware can only read media that is formatted to FAT32 and not ExFAT as some of the newer Micro SD cards of 64gb and above are formatted (the original firmware has no issues with this). If you buy a new 64gb+ card, chances are it will be ExFAT formatted; you will have to format it via a PC using a third party piece of software (free utilities which can be found on the web) as newer versions of Windows don't support FAT32 formatting anymore. I don't know if the Rockbox firmware has a format option, but if the card was ExFAT it wouldn't see it anyway! All in all, a very nice player.

This is an amazing little audio player for the price, I've loaded it up with 64gb and 128 gb cards and am working through the process of upgrading my music to lossless files. The sound quality is amazing when paired with Hifiman HE-400S's and at the moment I don't see the need for an extra headphone amplifier. Also sounds great when using the separate line out connection. The software is a bit clunky but it's extremely easy to install rockbox on it (literally took 5 minutes) and this improves things a lot. There are a still a few minor bugs and it freezes from time to time but overall would highly reccomend this if you have a large collection of lossless music and a decent pair of headphones.

Fist of all, I am used to using Apple Mac stuff, so this was a steep learning curve ... it took me several attempts, many choice swearwords, and several hours before I had managed to work out how to get music onto the machine ... a couple of resets eventually did the trick. Well, what can you say? Quite a bit actually ... as my wife said on first sight, "it looks just like a Lada" ... Mistakenly thinking she'd said "larder" I wholeheartedly agreed, since this little beauty can hold a massive larder-ful of CD-quality music. Regarding sound, it is great ... way better than the various iPods we own, goes much louder (vital for me since my hearing is failing), and through decent headphones sounds really really good (yes, I tried it with a pair of Grado PS1000 which Amazon were selling for £1700 only a couple of years ago ... and despite the price difference, the partnering is excellent). So, not very intuitive controls, excellent storage facility, great sound, good volume, and cheap as chips ... what's not to like? Oh, and the volume control buttons are truly excellent ... it's a stepped digital control, but with 100 steps, it means the control over the volume is really fine tuned ... brilliant. Sure, if I had the money to splash on the Onkyo DP-X1 Id have bought that, but for a far cheaper alternative, which just happens to be quite brilliant in its own right, you can't go far wrong with this little beauty.

The best of the HDDAP breed for the price. Supports all formats and bit rates to 24-192. The interface is simple, sound quality superb - bear in mind it needs a good 96 hours of burn in as the sound is very edgy before. Supports the full 128GBx2 SD card. Played back directly through a genuine 200 Watt PC amp, big B & W speakers and only a 20k POT for volume control, sounds incredible, although better with a PSU connected. Plug in an SD card with selection of HD masters and enjoy. Welcome to the world of Hi-Res. You'll never look (Listen!) back...

I wanted to pick up a cheap, high capacity player that plays FLAC files and was portable enough to take out running. I own a Creative Zen X-Fi and a Fiio X3 2nd Gen. Positives: - Well, the sound is very good; on a par with the Fiio and better than the Zen which sounds overdriven to my ears. The XDUOO provides a relaxed, easy listening experience that doesn't tire the listener. - The Operating System is very fast... the SD cards are selected without delay and no lag when you navigate. - Solid build quality. There is a lock button which seems to be a little loose but I can forgive this. - 2 SD Slots: great feature if like me you have loads of FLAC files. Negatives: - Unfortunately, if you want to navigate through artists and albums, you need to load your files up within with folders as the player won't allow you to select an album or artist if you just load all your music as individual files. This is OK for me, but I did need to clear my SD card after realising it wouldn't allow me to play albums when I loaded a bunch of FLAC files directly to the root directory. So if, like me, your music is in a folder for each artist and subfolders for albums, then just load them up like that and at least you have something approximating a usable interface. - The display is very hard to see when outdoors, and I'm not even talking about bright sunlight here. - The device doesn't allow you to queue your next album. This can be annoying if I'm out on a long run. - Gapless Playback isn't a feature which is a shame. I have noticed the odd clipping/ popping at the start of songs, but that could be down to the absence of gapless playback. Overall, this is a great DAP for the price. I can forgive the really basic UI 'cause what it does, it does perfectly well and the main thing is that it sounds great. Recommended.

A great bit of kit. Keeping in the Chinese mode I partnered this baby up with some Mi headphones and its a bargain way to access true HD FLACS via the DAC decoder within which is the reason for the price. 'Mac' style packaging reflects a good looking product which appears to be of high quality. If you are not going to invest in HD files I see little reason to buy one of these as there are cheaper models on the market. You also need to buy at least one micro SD card as there it has no internal memory but space for two cards. Overall pleased with this purchase and would recommend it to audiophiles. Dark Side of the Moon sounds significantly brighter! Slight downside is curious click instead of gap between some HD tracks which is annoying and sometimes spoils the atmosphere of the music. This only appears to occur on some files whilst not on others.Amended score to 3 stars as in haste I rather foolishly connected the audio output to my new soundbar via its USB port. This appears to have fried something as the player now turns on but the screen is locked and buttons do not work. I have tried using the reset but it does nothing. Online forums indicate downloadable firmware but I do not have the technical knowledge to try and install it. This thing now only serves as a shiny black paperweight! Update 1- My wife kindly got me another one as a present. Aaaaaah bless! Update 2 - On the virge of throwing 'paperweight ' away but following a tip provided by Amazon forum questions (Thanks a lot Mike!)I have got the original to work again. I tried an 18 second reset in unlock mode follwed by 19 second reset in lock ode. At first nothing happened. Tried a few more rsets holding in power button and then back button. Gave up on it and left product overnight. The following morning I turned it on and hey presto! It's working fine!. Now got two decent HD players and upped rating to 5 stars. Tempted to try to install Rockbox for more stable platform as fits purchase required software update.

I love this player; to find a MP3 player to hold 160gb or over is pretty hard these days, I'll compare this to the iPod classic, what saddly you can't buy anymore. It can hold more gd, up to 256gb. The 128gb sd cards; you can find on eBay for £6 each. Loading music is so easy, simple drag and drop or sync Windows media player. ( I've got all my itunes in here as well) It's a lot cheaper and I think it's better quality. I've had a lot of problems with the ipods, this has had no problems and the outside looks like it's well made. It's a lot better sound quality, it includes a line out Jack and a headphone jack. Negatives It's very basic, it's a basic digital screen, it dosnt have the options the iPod has; such as, repeat, shuffle etc. It will be good if you could buy a case for it, I keep mine in a little pouch. I'm not sure if it's the players fault or it's the files, I find one in 10 albums the track names don't appear, but when it's on, playing now they show up, but it dosnt bother me. Someone has put the battery life is only 4hr, but I'm sure it lasts longer. Looking at it, you'll think it was made by Sony

Probably the best dap below 150£. Very good sound quality , aluminum built , great battery life (rev2 has 2000mah battery instead of the 1500mah of rev1) and 2x microsd slots is a feature missing in any other dap below 240£ (must go to cayin n5 or fiio x5). The UI is very simple (no artwork,no EQ) and the best way to listen to your music is by browsing folders .At least this has the advantage of being very fast and responsive. You can easily install Rockbox fw that fixes a pitch control issue and adds more options (EQ etc) . Reduced a star for the basic UI and for the hiss when pairing sensitive IEM's .Not audible though in moderate volumes or when paired with "big" headphones. The Line out is perfectly clear (hiss free) though and it is a joy when paired with my Fiiio E12 . This combo can play anything with great sound quality. For the price (78£) it is a steal !

A little bit of history first. I brought this DAP to replace my old 1st gen iPod nano after the screen stopped working, which in turn replaced my old iPod 2nd gen click wheel after the hard drive gave up, so an Apple fan I have been for many a year. Though I was generally happy with the nano and felt that solid state memory was the way to go over less reliable hard drive tech, I always felt that the nano suffered from 2 main issues, i.e memory space and the sound quality of mp3 files. Because of my increasing dislike of heavily compressed sound I had even started to listen to CD's again whilst driving and at home, but found them to be impractical on the road. The quest then began for a replacement portable digital audio player. I started looking for a decent budget replacement that would handle a wide variety of formats with the main emphasise on the ability to play lossless formats such as .flac. I ruled out Apple due to price, drm, itunes and over reliance on touch screens, the other products that I viewed didn't cut it for a number of reasons. My head then became turned by the higher spec and higher priced portable hifi options on offer. Prices for these can run into fairly big money. Now I'm no audiophile so couldn't justify such expense, but I did come across some budget options. I eventually narrowed done my choices to the Sony A15 and the Fii0 X3. Both competent hi def players and both very well priced. The Sony was disregarded because reviewers disliked the build quality, so the Fii0 became my number one target. Now the Fii0 is a lovely looking peice of kit and gets many stellar reviews, but in the course of reading the reviews I stumbled upon mention of the xDuoo X3, which at half the price of the Fii0 X3 was getting a lot of praise for its build and sound quality. My interest was peaked and after reading many positive reviews I decided to make a purchase. I really can't express how good the xDuoo X3 is, especially for the price. I choose the silver finish as it was available on Amazon prime and 2 days later it arrived. The product itself is boxed in smart packaging and after unboxing reveals itself to be a dinky little peice of kit roughly half the size of a tv remote control. The case is made of aluminuim alloy with a lovely milled spiral affect on the front surface. The manufacturer calls this CD lines finish and it's very nice indeed. The back has a silver matt finish and the buttons feel very positive and are nicely finished with rounded off edges. The screen take up most of the top 3rd of the device and is a basic OLED screen. Also included in the box is a micro usb charging cable. That is all you get. This player has no in built storage for your music so you will need to buy micro sd cards (it takes two cards up to 128gb each, so 256gb total) nor does it come packaged with the sort of cheap headphones that normally get chucked in a draw with the dozens of similar headphones that you already own. I purchased a pair of Fii0 EX1 in ear monitors to use with this player, but any descent headset would be an essential purchase to get the most out of this player. Once I'd loaded up the purchased micro sd card with a selection of 16 and 24 bit .flac music files I retired to a comfortable chair in the garden and proceeded to have my mind blown. The sound quality is exceptional. As I stated previously I am no audiophile, but the detail of the sound is amazing. Even listening to music that I thought I knew inside out, I was hearing detail that just wasn't noticable before. Mp3's sounded better, .flac files sound fantastic and the 24 bit hi def stuff is a step beyond even that. Usability of the device is very good. The button layout seems strange at first, even a bit retro, but it just works. The volume controls are on the side and fall very easily to hand as do all the other buttons and after a few minutes you're controlling the player without even looking at it. There is also a dedicated lock button on the side. The Linux based operating system is quite basic yet does most of what you need it to do, and is quick and stable This can be replaced quite simply with the UI from Rockbox for lots more functionality and support for things like playlists and EQ, yet so far I haven't found it neccessary to do this. The display is easy to read indoors and contains all the info you need, but is a little difficult to read in direct sunlight. The DAP also has dedicated line out next to the headphone socket on the bottom of the player, which works perfectly when connected to my in car audio and my home amp. I found this to be a very easy to use music player and didn't need to refer to the brief and quite poorly translated instruction manual to get up and running. The only negative points for me were the slightly fiddly micro sd ports (fat finger syndrome) and the brightness of the display when in direct sunlight. There is also a lack of available covers to protect it form damage. Also you will need to make sure that memory cards are formatted to Fat 32 if you want to replace the firmware and be aware that battery life is about 8to 10 hours between charges. In conclusion I found this to be an exceptional digital audio player. Portable Hifi sound combined that with good functionality and a high quality tactile finish is, for this price, quite frankly amazing. If you're addicted to apple products, need on board storage, touch screen capability, games and 'free' headphones then keep on walking 'cos there is nothing here for you. If on the other hand you want great sound for very little money then you can't go wrong with the xDuoo X3.

Awsome DAP but...... This is a really great DAP but the stock firmare is very basic and lets the player down. However, salvation is at hand with a very easy upgrade to RockBox. Once this is done and you've chosen a theme you like it becomes a truly marvellous DAP. The RockBox port is for the Sansa Clip and cleverly the original firmare is left on the DAP so you can boot to either. You are also able to roll back to the stock firmware if you wish (but you never will). The Rockbock firmare comes with a 100+ page manual that is excellent and goes through the myriad options available. The only slight dissapointment is the OLED display is not very bright, and in daylight you'll struggle to see it. So 4 stars out the box, with Rockbox it's pushing perfection. Rip CDs to FLAC format and connect to decent headphones or HiFi and you'll be amazed!
