This unit requires 8 AA batteries. You could either use 8 AA batteries, or get a 12v rechargable pack. I would advise against plugging the device into a 12v power source while having batteries inside the device. I use cheap alkaline batteries, but I have contemplated getting a 12v rechargable pack.
