I have used these and love them. The reason why I only gave 4 stars is that I've seen a different version on Stew Mac (for more money, mind you) that come with notches so an elastic can be used to hold them in place allowing you full use of both hands. I guess if I had a neck support caul that might not be as much of an issue. Even without self clamping bands these make working on the frets like polishing with steel wool so much faster due to not having to tape up the fingerboard.

At first I felt a bit customer driven ripped off to spend a few bucks on a cut out piece of metal. These cant cost more than pennies to make. However if you are looking to isolate your frets on your guitar to hit it with some polishing material, this does the job so that you fret board doesnt get hit as well. I used it to polish my frets with 0000 steel wool, came out very nice with no micro scratches to the rosewood.

I agree with some of the other reviews that the edges on this item are pretty rough and could potentially damage your fret board. This means that you have to either file the rough edges down yourself or put tape across your fret board (which kind of defeats the purpose of getting this item in the first place). Adding tape would make it more difficult to get a good angle on your crowning file, so IMO you're better off just trying to file the rough edges down. This is still better than nothing and avoids having to tape down your entire fret board. Hence, I give it a 4-star rating.

These are pretty well made guards. I haven't used them use but I did check them out. thin enough so that you have room to work and really get the frets to the right size/shape when crowning. Only complaint is that the edges are still pretty sharp...would have preferred that they were honed a little so they don't pose such a risk to the guitar finish. but I guess just use them cautiously and you shouldn't have any problems.
