Q

What are the gauges of the nut files? Do they start a .010 and work their way up to .046 or .052?

A
  • The files I received were 10-46

Q

Has anyone used these nut files to make a nut from scratch? If so how well did it go for you?

A
  • these are small precision files meant to file the appropriate string gauge slots in a nut, not to shape a block of material into a nut...for that a belt sander or a piece of sandpaper wrapped around a flat board will work...or any all purpose mill file.

  • Marty, this is what I want you to do: get an index card, and and lay your string action ruler, "Baroque-side-up" in the middle of the card. Above the middle-top of the string action ruler, write: Sting Height Scale-0.25-3.50mm. Go to the middle bottom of the string action ruler, write: String Height Scale-0.01-0.14". Go to the left-side-top scale, write: Bridge/ Saddle Slot/Depth Scale (inch). Go down, to the left-side-bottom scale, write: Scale For Nuts, Saddles And PolePieces (inch). Go to the right-side-top scale, write: Scale For Nuts, Saddles And PolePieces (mm). Go down, to the right-side bottom scale, write: Bridge/Saddle Slot/Depth Scale (mm). Marty, get a new index card and lay the string action ruler in the middle of it face-side-down. You should be able to read "String Action At 12th Fret". Go to the middle-top, write: 75mm Scale. Go to the middle bottom, write 3" Scale. You should see two columns, 1st string and 6th string. Your string action (height) should be close to that at the 12th Fret ( 1st & 6th strings). Write that down, & try it out for yourself. Get someone to help you if you need to. Save the index cards, they will be your instructions. Use a steel ruler too. Tripp Gazzer see less

Its excellent for what it is. The writing IS laser etched, not a sticker like some have said. (The plastic is just a protective overlay like you have on any stainless steel item, you just peel it off, dummies).. This is actually a quality little tool. BUT you could do it cheaper using coins or cards as a gauge.

This came fast. You get what you paid for folks. The file faces are numbered, so notice that when you try out the files they are different sizes? Nice case. SW

Very handy tool. I just finished making an electric mandolin, as well as buying a new acoustic guitar. This was very handy in setting them both up.

Build quality is good. However trying to use this myself to setup the guitar with no prior experience is not easy. Too many scales with no mention of the units is just overwhelming. Usually guitar setup directives - say something like Low E string at 12th fret needs to have x mm of action etc. However since the scales does not have units you need to speculate which scale is in in inches, which is mm etc

And it does a fine job as a fret rocker, too. Add that to the list!

Nice gauge, Has all the right measurements for making adjustments to your axe. I would give it 5 stars if the print was just a little darker and easier to read. But, anyone setting up guitars should have one of these. Good tool.

Great time saver for getting an instrument setup, albeit it's difficult to see under the strings to get an accurate measurement of the string height from the bottom of the string to the 12th fret. I find myself having to go back to feel for fine tuning after getting things in the ballpark with this gauge. Still a good product, but not as accurate as a caliper with a depth gauge.

I needed a guage to measure pickup height in mm. My ruler didn't start measuring at the edge so this is perfect. For the price, it's a great deal.

Good for large gauge strings and bass (with a little work). If your using 9's look elsewhere.
