I played alto for ten years, then took way too long of a break (an additional ten years), and decided to get back into it, which made me want a tenor. Short version of this review: With some tweaking, this would be an absolutely perfect instrument for a beginner. I ended up returning mine because a few keys wouldn't seal and it was missing one or two of the pads that keep the keys from running into the key guards because I didn't want to deal with it (and frankly found a good deal on a much better sax), but other than those two (admittedly minor) things, this was a great tenor for $400. With some work, if someone got this instrument, they could probably figure out what needs to be bent/adjusted to get all the keys to seal, and even if not, they could easily take it to an instrument shop and probably get them adjusted for around $50, bringing the total price of this brand new tenor saxophone to $450. Still well below most pieces at least I've found. Outside of the bent keys and a missing protective pad or two, the sound of the horn was pretty great. The included (unmarked) reed was absolute trash and the mouthpiece had a bit of a wave in the tip that didn't seem to affect playing. Not a good mouthpiece, though. Included reed made it nearly impossible to play some notes. Switching to a Vandoren blue box reed made a world of difference. Did not check intonation of instrument, but it sounded okay to my ear (i.e. in tune with itself). Neck fit into the joint pretty well. Cork was trash, but should survive for at least a while. Neckstrap could barely be considered a neckstrap. All in all, had my keys not been bent and a pad or two missing, this would have been a hell of a buy and I probably would have held on to it for at least 3 years.
