If you can spend a bit more, source your own bill of parts from Guitar Center (misc parts, Fender p'ups) , Fender (MIM neck, body), Stewart MacDonald (misc parts), etc. see less

Great kit! I've made 3 of these so far and plan to keep ordering more. The neck is a chunky "U" shape at the headstock and becomes more of a "D" as you move up. There's no hole for running the ground to the bridge, so you'll need a long drill bit to reach the rear pup cavity at the right angle. On the latest kit there was a problem with the 17th fret but the other two were fine. Those two things are the only knock (-1 star) I have on quality. Other than that they've been a joy to work on. The basswood and maple are easy to do pyrography on too.

My kit arrived quickly after I ordered it. The pictured kit differs from the kit I received in 2 ways- 1) the truss rod is accessible from the headstock (which is good), and 2) the middle pickup cavity is pickup shaped unlike the rectangular route pictured online. I was very happy about these things because the pickup routing allows for the pickguard to be left off and for easier adjustment of the neck. I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of the kit for $65. My only real gripe is that the neck is a P-Bass style neck and not a Jazz bass shaped neck. My bass turned out great and for this low price you will not find a better kit on the market.

I bought this bass a few months ago, and gave it some time to see how everything went. First I want to say, for the money, this is an awesome kit, that I really don't think can be beat anywhere. Here's some of my thoughts from there. The neck is pretty legit. It had a few rough spots on the fret board that needed to be sanded out carefully, and was very very dry, but a little bit of conditioning oil brought it right back from that. The tuners were, ok, I ended up changing them out with some grover bass tuners, but they ones in the kit would have been fine. The pickups were again, ok. I like a little more punchy pickup even in a jazz bass, so I switched those out as well. The body was shaped well, but when I got mine in the mail, it had slipped all over in the packaging so it had several pretty large cuts in it that took me some time to fill. I also put a .5 shim in so the I could adjust the the string height a little more on setup. Otherwise I had to bottom out the bridge, and I just don't like doing that. All in all I was incredibly impressed with the bass for the money, and even with these upgrades, I have an awesome bass, for right around $200. It seems very solid, and I expect to be playing this instrument for years to come!

Really was skeptical about this purchase. I must say the painting and building process was very fun. It was a blast to focus on every little detail. Take your time on this and you'll end up with a wonderful instrument. Hardware is solid and guitar is predrilled for your convenience. I'll eventually change out the pickups and bridge but thr existing hardware seems great so far. The bass will require a setup and bridge adjustment. If you aren't comfortable doing this, a guitar shop will be happy to help. I plan to build another one, this was a great project!
