The total amount of light in the two positions seem to be the same. What I observed is that in the 2 LED mode, the two LEDs that come on are very bright. In the 6 LED mode, all 6 LEDs have a lower intensity. This can be hard to observe, but if you put something opaque over the other 4 LEDs, and then go between the two settings, you can clearly see the intensity of the 2 LEDs change. Bell + Howell now sells a similar item without the battery for less cost, which is a good option if you are trying to use up all of those old smoke detector batteries like I am (search for "bell + howell micro brite"). see less

None are waterproof. Water will get between the battery and the light head. Water is a conductor and WILL short things out. The switches will leak also.
