Contact seller. I have 5 of them, most parts are online. But chips need to be programmed to clock. On the other hand, they are so cheap, do a search and just buy a new one is easiest.

As long as they are supervised with a HOT soldering iron and if the adult also knows how to solder. The instructions are reasonable.

I did see a reference to doing so but didn't follow the link. Key chips seem to be open market so if you know how to hack it should be easy. Do not know if the source us available.

Nice little kit. Came together in a couple of hours. You'll need solder, soldering iron, cutters and a small Philips screwdriver. The only thing not included that would have been helpful is a button cell size. After making a few measurements and a trip to a battery store, it seems that using a 1216 button cell works just fine. When installing the cell, turn the negative contact down towards the PCB. It does seem the battery is optional and only used for backup if the power is removed. I operated mine for a day or so without the cell and it worked fine so no worries if you don't have one handy when you turn it on. The photo shows the kit assembled from the component side; the display is turned face down. After putting the box together, it looks exactly as shown in the figure. One modification I would suggest is to add a resistor in the speaker lead to reduce the volume. If you go down this route, you'll need to experiment with the value to get the volume right for you. For me, the announcer is Just a little loud. Otherwise a great kit, I had fun and it works well.
