It does not need the waterproof case. The housing itself is waterproof and you can start and stop video or take pics with the buttons on the outside on the rear of it. Not sure because some gopro models have different sizes. I use mine with a 4 it works fine but for the 5 it would not work.

This seals great and looks good through dome at first, however for my use we mounted on a goose-neck clamp and it was a bit unstable. (half submerged) This was more the clamp's fault. The dome tended to bead up with water and not stay clear. Rainx might help that I imagine. Still, need more time with the product. But all in all a good value.
