Will this work on a guitar?

A
  • It probably will work on a guitar. It works by contact pick up (not air pickup like a voice mic). As long as it makes solid contact with the instrument, it should work.

could i use it on a mountain dulicumer

A
  • Yes, actually. The "arm" you see at the top is the spring-loaded clip and microphone. It will clip in the holes just fine. It is pretty small. We use it on 2 violins at church.

Could i use this on my ukulele or charango?

A
  • Jacoba, I bought this microphone for my husband's viola, but I have used it at church with my ukulele. The problem is finding a safe place to clip it on, so it depends on how your instrument is designed. Experiment with it and it should work. It is a really nice little device. Good luck! - Lori K.

Does any nick or or other sign of being attached tr violin f-home (which wood is thin and appears fragile)?

A
  • I bought this, it works very well and It hasn't damaged my violin or any other I string instrument I've used it with. Just put it on and off carefully.

Would this sound good with a cello or upright bass? Would it be able to adequately handle the lower frequencies?

  • Based on its design, it would probably work for any string instrument where there is a hole to clip in to. We're using a pretty expensive Realist SoundClip on our cello, which has great audio reproduction and sounds authentically "there". Maybe next time our cellist plays I'll see how this sounds when clipped on, and give an update. see less

This little piece of plastic has served me well for literally hundreds of gigs, recording, and practicing. I know this sounds crazy. I ordered this on a complete whim just to mess around with a potential cheap backup to my Fishman in-bridge pickup for some country gigs. IMMEDIATELY I was blown away by how awesome it sounds and how quick it is to set up. Just pop it on your fiddle and you're good to go. PROS: - Cheap. as. hell. No, really, it's $5. Do you know what that means? You can order 10 of them for half the cost of most fiddle pickups. Cable short out? It's cheaper than breaking ONE string. Get drunk and step on it/spill beer/set a PA head on it and break it? No guilt whatsoever, just change it out! - The sound... the sound is great. I'm still experimenting with this little thing. I run it through a little tube preamp and it has given me great sound for bluegrass, modern country, classic country, old time, folk, rock gigs -- everything. If you like the natural sound of your instrument, this is the way to go. - Totally removable! Takes about 5 seconds to put in and out of the instrument. If you play some gigs without a pickup and some gigs with, but want to use the same instrument without an ever-present input jack, this is the way to go. - Doesn't mute the acoustic sound at all. Picks up a great representation of the natural sound without the bridge-muting that comes with some VERY EXPENSIVE pickups. CONS: - Okay... so the quality is not perfect. I've had ONE cord short out on me in almost a year of hard use. But seriously... for 5 bucks... who cares? - The 1/4 inch cable is very light and very short. Not a lot of stage room. You may need an extension or a preamp if you're not VERY CLOSE to your PA head. - The pickup moves around a little depending on where it's placed on the bridge. This does a great job of preserving the sound, but a) makes it a little more likely to feed back when you're playing a really loud rock gig and b) sometimes leads to noise of the pickup moving if you bump it accidentally. But hey, who can hear it over the guitarists tuning anyway? TLDR: just order it and find out for yourself.

This has been a great purchase for me. It's a simple solution for amplifying my acoustic violin. There has been a slight issue with écho, but it has been solved by playing with the placement of the pick up on the violin till you find the sweet spot. Once done, I'm able to get a clear and crisp sound. I've used it for recordings, TV performances and live performances with no problem. My only concern is with how thin the cord is. I forsee shorts later down but at this price and for such quality, i think it's worth it.

So the key here is that this is a sub-10$ clip-on pickup for violins and/or wood-body strings with some sort of hole in them. I am using this at a church for live sound. Here's the pro / con list: Pro: * The sound quality is perfectly adequate for non-pro live sound. I consider our church group non-pro (not all religious-music settings may agree). The sound need some light EQ, but otherwise succeeded in solving our primary problem, which is * Not needing to mic a live violin means fewer issues with feedback, and I can pump the strings higher in the main mix * I was pleased that there was minimal floor noise to this. Nothing that couldn't be easily EQd out. I found that a 5-10dB drop around 10-12kHz seemed to do the trick Con: * The sound quality does suffer a bit. The 'hollow' sound of the body is the primary feeling to it, as opposed to a pickup that works directly through the bridge. * I had to push about 22 dB of gain to get the volume to where I wanted it to be * Placement is somewhat restricted. You can kind of move it around on the f-hole and get it closer to the bridge. I didn't have a ton of time to test and see, but I am fairly certain that placement makes a difference to sound * The cord makes noise. Tape it down with some gaf tape or something so that it doesnt bump against the violin body. All things considered, this is a great choice on a low budget. I'm trying a KNA pickup as well, and will update this post depending on how much better that ends up being.

I've used these pick-ups for all sorts of things, some above and beyond their intended task. As a fiddle pickup, I was pleasantly surprised as to how good it actually sounded once I got it into a place that it liked. Caveat -- this can be a bit of a challenge. One of my fiddles has a spot where this pickup sounds amazing, but it took me a while to find it. That said, as with most pickups, this needs a little eq and/or effects to really sound good. I've also used it with good success on a Mandolin and an Octave Mandolin that were lacking pickups. Even though my main fiddle has a bridge pickup, I keep one of these in the case as a backup. I also keep a few around for general use/experimenting, etc. Caveats: The cord isn't as long as I'd like it to be, but I just run it into a pedal board or DI box near my feet. It has a male end, so it isn't like a traditional pickup with a jack. Can be finicky on where it likes to clip and stay AND where it sounds the best. However, if you get it in the right spot and it stays, it can sound very good. Hard to beat for the price!

These are good to a point. I have used them for multiple shows where I needed audio off of violins, viola, Cello, ukulele, etc. they do work but you have to make sure they are seated to the instrument properly. If you have time to line check then you are good to go. If you're depending on a stage hand or musician to place it, it will sound terrible. That said, they can sound good if you do it right.

Be careful! The plastic isn't very durable and will snap with any excess pressure.

This is a great pickup. The other reviewers were absolutely right. I am going to order another just to have one. I used it to play two shows already and it did an amazing job.

Good design, though the wire is a little thin. It works well and is easy to attach to a violin.
