Assembled as instructed. Square wave works fine, but triangle and sine do not. They produce non square waves but def not sine or triangle.

  • Not sure what is used, if anything, for output conditioning circuit but have you considered loading the output? try a 600-ohm 1/2-watt resistor across the output at @10% amplitude... these things are typically spec'd at 600-ohm impedance

What is the maximum power draw on this unit? I want to incorporate this into a prototyping board I'm making and need to calculate the combined draw.

  • According to stock spec sheet...8mA...measured at pin 1...its just a signal generator...not a driver...very low current

One other point, make sure the connector for the outputs is turned outward, so that the side where wires are connected for the output are indeed facing outward. Other than these issues, if a person is experienced, the bad directions for assembly can be set aside and just follow the circuit board pattern and values to assemble this very good test device. The resistor values may be hard to read, so use an ohm meter to find the right part to go to which position. Be careful, take your time, and it should all go together quite well. Other than the case issues, and the very bad assembly directions, it IS a good signal generator. see less

I have read the xr2206 can be used to block elf. is that even possible with this?

  • The xr2206 is a monolithic function generator. The e.l.f. or Extremely Low Frequency spectrum is a range of frequencies of 3 ~ 30-hz. If you are trying to block this specific range, I am not sure that is even possible since wave propagation in this range is 100,000-10,000 km and very close to earth-ground...

Bild).

Hmm! I have not connected to a scope but used a DVM with frequency meter and found a couple of other things in addition to the other reviewers comments: 1/. amplitude is wired wrong way round clock wise decreases level? 2/. C2 and C3 have to be laid flat to get the case to close 3/. the fine coarse pots do not work very well set coarse to min and fine seems to give the full range as well I was a bit horrified that there was no buffer amp on the output like the LM386 and tl084 maybe the XP website holds more info on this device not much there I am afraid mechanically it took a bit of time to realise the screw and nut were the spacer and needed the 2 caps layed flat to fit even then the socket is quite tall in comparrison with a turned pin. I had to snip the tips of the ic legs to get the case to close completely. it is not a digitally synthesised sine wave hence the other comments about the sine not looking particularly sine wave. It is what it is and for 8 GBP is quite fun to put together.

Very good value-for money, build it yourself, kit of parts. Took about half an hour to assemble and solder the electronics. There are five short screws with nuts which are too short to do anything with. Four longer screws hold it all together by cutting their thread into the pre-drilled holes. Getting the protective paper off the pre-shaped plastic case parts is not easy but the plastic material is excellent. Connected up using a 10 volt power source and it worked first time. All three wave shapes are good once you get the hang of the function of the three beautiful mechanical action, smooth as silk, potentiometers. The amplitude control operates in reverse but not a big deal. Also, turning up the amplitude too much causes the sine wave to clip and saturate at the top. Finished item measures (7.2 x 5.5 x 3.5) cm. An all-round great buy.

I have been rather impressed with this, very small unit and works well. Also good fun to assemble without taking too long. Some things worth noting are as follows: - The amplitude control controls the sine and triangle output, the square wave output is fixed in amplitude. - On my unit, the lowest amplitude is around 0.5 volts (on open load). The output impedance would appear to be 600 ohms from the XR-2206 datasheet. - Although the case comes with 8 M3 bolts and nuts, the bolts that are used to hold the top and bottom together dont need nuts as the lower part of the box has smaller holes and the bolts are intended to self tap into those.

Excellent, low cost, function generator. It's based on a Voltage Controlled Oscillator (VCO) chip which is usually used on electronic instruments. Although the kit is fairly easy to put together, I wouldn't recommend it if you haven't made electronics kits before because the instructions are not very explicit. For example, you need to know the resistor colour coding. On mine, the screws to hold the circuit board to the box were too short and I had to use different ones. it is very sensitive to the voltage of the power supply. Under 9v and the wave gets distorted but over 12v, even slightly, affects frequency stability. Most plug in power units give much more than their rated voltage when lightly loaded (and this is a light load). My first try, an old power plug rated at 9v, gave poor results because it was giving 13.5v. I ended up using a 7.5v power plug which gave, when powering this product, 11v. A 9v battery should work fine.

I Love this little function generator, but I have two problems with it. 1. The pots on the board feel cheap and one broke, I was able to replace it easily enough. 2. The screws did not seem long enough to hold the case together. I just used hot glue. Other than those two things this is a great kit for people that are new to hobby electronics or seasoned professionals. I use this thing a considerable amount alongside my lab grade function generator. The square wave on mine is not working that well but the sine and triangle wave work just fine. This is a wonderful function generator for the price and can be put together with basic electronic knowledge.

This kit was easy to build, but a low-wattage (20W max) soldering pen with a small point tip like the Hakko 900M-T-B or -BC tips is recommended. I powered mine with a 12V AC-to-DC adapter, and tested it with a DSO 068 oscilloscope and a Fluke 87-V calibrated mulitmeter. It produced good square, triangle, and sine waves, although the amplitude of the square waves is not adjustable. It's a good, basic, low-power function generator. The Fluke indicated that it maintained steady frequencies in the middle ranges, although it started jumping around a bit at the higher range. I'm satisfied.

Great little kit. The XR2206 chip has been around for a long time and is well proven. I think I built my first hand made signal generator with it back in the late 70's, though it wasn't nearly this compact. The triangle wave is squared (multiplied by itself) in order to form the sine wave, which results in a sine wave with about 0.5% harmonic distortion, which is high but still useful for many applications. The kit could have used some instruction for the case. I put the plastic case parts under water for a while in order to get the protection paper off without scratching the plastic. Have a magnifier handy to read the numbers on the caps, especially if your eyes are as old as mine!.

Generates a well-defined square waves, triangle waves, and sine waves up to 1 MHZ as described. You can generate signals up to 5 MHZ, but they look very rough. It has DC bias in the output, but is relatively easy to remove. It's an easy to build, it takes a little under 30 minutes. Unfortunately, I was hoping there was instructions on how it works, but can't dock off points for a loose assumption. If you notice distortion in the output, your amplitude is too high. It will clip if you don't adjust the amplitude potentiometer. I have the output (AC coupled which removes the bias) in my review. I forgot to take a picture of the square wave, but I found the rise time being around 200ns with little ringing. I should note that I used a 9 volt battery with a connector soldered directly to the board instead of using the jack. I haven't checked the quality of the case, but I'm not planning to put it on anytime soon. I'm not a professional with electronics, so I'm not completely sure if the accuracy is sufficient for testing equipment. However, it looks fantastic to me.

Works as expected. A bit tricky to screw in the short screws that link the bottom plate to the board. Keep the power connector unsoldered until you are really sure what height it has to be soldered at (not fully touching the board as to be above the side margin but not too high. You will also have to trim to the bone the soldering side (otherwise the screws are too short), which means you really need good quality soldering that goes all the way through the hole. Frequencies controlled by the jumper are not really as inscribed on the box but will do from below 1 HZ to more than 1Mhz.

I bought this with little expectation that it would perform..but I figured..for $13.00..why not take a chance. received today and assembled with no difficulty...I noticed a bit of "noise" at first...but touched up some of the solder joints--and assembled in case (not optional give stray capacitance sensitivity) and it worked pretty much perfectly! tested on a rigol DS1054 and used it to tune the IF coils in an old radio an hour after assembly. It gave it five stars based on its utility and price. The only caveat is that you really need to have an oscilloscope to measure output and tune. Important note--I've noticed online that several vendors restrict output to 200khz--this model was good up to 1.3MGHz with little noise...very very happy with purchase!

This was a simple and fun project. It had been a few years since I had last soldered and had some more difficult projects I wanted to do so I had decided to purchase this as a warm up. It was pretty straight forward, and in the end everything worked. Definitely a good project for a beginner. It did seem to have a bit of a lack of instruction in general which might bother some beginners. But its also a good way to get your brain working on these types of things if you dont know exactly what to do. Its not too difficult to figure out though. Just make sure you know what a ground symbol looks like, and you know the differences between the positive and negative legs on some of the parts. Also if you are colorblind like me, the resistor selection will probably drive you nuts for a while. But that is to be expected if your colorblind and trying to do electronic work. Its practically impossible for me to read the color codes on those tiny resistors. But if you can make out the patterns on the gold and orange bands and compare them with patterns on google images you can probably figure it out. Good luck on the reds and browns though lol. It took a lot of time and critical decision making to make sure I had the right ones, but everything worked the first time so I applaud myself.
