I wouldn't think so. The probe needs to be in contact with the wire in question

You can hear it without the earpiece. I think the speaker is more for working in a noisy environment like a server room or something.

No. It won't tell you where the splice is.... This is actually made for toning out rj45 (Ethernet) or rj11 (phone) you could do an individual wire... But it won't tell you where it is spliced .... Sorry

In my experience, the detection of the voltage requires the device to be in pretty close proximity to the wire you are wanting it to detect the voltage in. Not sure if it would not have to be as close with higher voltage like a regular 120 house wire or an UG wire or not. I was only detecting super low voltage in CAT5 cables, so it had to be within a few inches of the wire (1 to 3 inches I would say with nothing in between the tool and the cable.) Hope this helps. see less

If you’re referring to a line that is plugged in to a switch on one end, and this tone generator at the client/workstation/whatever end, then, yes. The tone can still be introduced into the line, and picked up by the probe when the line is plugged into another device on the opposite end.

I used it in the middle of a very noisy data center room and it was plenty loud enough.
