Q

how sharp is it? compared to the canon glass? that is my big worry I love the price point but how is the edges and sharpness

  • I use this with a Canon T6. It is pretty sharp.

Q

Is this compatible with canon t6i?

A
  • Yes, however, it is a full frame lens so on the t6i the crop factor is important. This lens will be a 80mm f1.8 on the t6i. It WILL work perfectly but the focal length is the longer 80mm on that camera as it will be on all Canon APS-c sized sensor cameras. It is only a 50mm f1.8 on a full frame Canon Camera like the 5D series.

Q

How does this differ from the real canon 50 mm lens?

A
  • Ignore the other answers, as they are incorrect. This lens has an autofocus motor that squeals like a pig and is overall made with cheaper mateirals. I would only recommend it if you are using it in a place where there is no other people around.

I bought this lens to use on my Canon EOS Rebel T6S based on the positive reviews not expecting much for the low price, but I was pleasantly surprised with the results. The lens takes great shots with a beautiful blurry background with open aperature! It sounds like a blender full of marbles when it's focusing so it's probably not great for video with audio, but for $50 it takes incredible still shots! While the plastic mount and overall construction feels a little cheap, you need to be careful with all lenses anyway, so I don't see that being a detraction from this lens's value. If you're used to very expensive lenses costing 20x or more you might not be happy with this, but if you're already considering buying it don't delay, because you could be missing out on some incredible photos!

The lens is decent for the price point and is a good starting lens. Pros- The lense's price point was relatively good and offered a cheaper alternative rather than Canon's lenses which can run up past $300 or more. Very fast focusing. Cons- The photos come out blurry when taken on the lowest F-stop available for the lens though increasing the F-stop by one or two stops should fix that. Conclusion: I overall enjoyed the lens as it had a cheap price point that didn't break the bank and provided a better alternative to Canon's lenses for photographers who don's have much money.

It's okay for $68 and I did not expect a lot. I just wanted to try out a 50mm prime before I spent big money on a good lens. This lens does not have sharp focus, it is soft everywhere. However, I do have to give it credit for having some amazing bokeh! The photos I took can certainly be considered decent "snapshots" but if you try to crop at 100% you will not be happy. REVISION: Thanks to another user who pointed out that there is also a plastic cover on the inside lens (I had removed the cover from the front lens) I removed it and took some more photos. Well yeah, there is a marked improvement in IQ. Silly me. Who knows how long I would have gone before I noticed it. TO ALL BUYERS: THERE ARE PLASTIC COVERS ON BOTH THE FRONT AND REAR LENSES! So now I am happy with the lens and will be using it more than I expected. I have added one more photo. This is a 100% crop, unretouched, after removing the plastic from the inside or rear lens.

I am always hesitant to purchase an off brand lens, as I shoot professionally. However, I was encouraged by the Reddit post during which the photographer completely took apart the lens in comparison to the Canon 50mm equivalent, and shot with another one. He was so impressed, and the images were so beautiful, I felt safe in purchasing the lens. I am extremely pleased with the lens. The only complaint I have is in focusing - every so often it takes too long to focus, especially if the subject is a ways away. Otherwise, I couldn't be happier.

At first I was disappointed in this lens as it seemed to lack heavily in the sharpness department and it seemed to hunt for focus. However, I soon discovered the manufacturer had placed a protective plastic sticker over the inside element of the lens (the glass closest to the sensor) that I had not seen. One I removed this sticker the performance of the lens was just I had expected from reading up on it on the photo sites- excellent! I wouldn't pay more than $60 for this lens because anymore than that and you could just get the canon version but for the $40-$60 range this lens performs exceedingly well.

After reading the mixed reviews, I hesitantly purchased this lens fully prepared to be faced with noise and out of focus shots. Thankfully, those negative reviews have not been my experience! I've taken this lens for a run twice now at two outdoor events with tons of activity, varying outdoor lighting (harsh mid-day sun, indirect sun and shade) and when looking through the shots at the end of the day, I can easily say the only thing that needs improvement are my composition skills. I felt the lens was extremely responsive and behaved exactly as I would expect, and the light weight and small size of the lens made for a much better outdoor photography experience than I'm used to. With the lens set to aperture priority 1.8, the shots were crystal clear at my focus points, and even though the subject (a toddler) was constantly moving, the lens had no troubles keeping up. Switched to shutter priority, it responded like a dream and the images looked exactly as I would expect. As a family/lifestyle photographer, I have to say I wish it hadn't taken me so long to get this lens!! It will be a staple in my bag for every photo shoot or family trip.

First I want to say how light weight the lense is! Sure it's made of plastic but look at the cost and don't ask for the world. Shots got instantly in focus about 98%, the other 2% were difficult scenes to focus in so it's understandable and when switching to manual mode I was able to quickly get the shot. Images were crisp and sharp but more importantly this lense allowed me to get nice shots at night at lower iso's than my other lenses. Although for night time shots you may need to manually focus depending on how dark the subject is (as long as the subject is lit, I was able to auto focus). All in all, I am very impressed with this lense and plan to keep it for a very long time.

It's an excellent lens, though I'm unsure how it may work for different cameras, if works wonders on my Canon XTI. The bokeh is wonderful, and manually focusing on f/1.8 isn't as difficult as I'd made it out to be. Though, I do recommend only using Auto focus when you really need to, since the product is quite plastic and cheap--i limit my use to auto focus, and even with auto focus, it focuses so well. I recommend this lens to my fullest. The one problem I've had is that say if I focus in auto, sometimes the subject I'm focusing on is slightly blurry on the viewfinder, but when I take the picture its in complete focus. Just a pet peeve, that im seeming to gradually adapt to. But still, a great lens for the price. I haven't removed it since I received it.

I decided to learn digital photography with my wife's old Rebel XT. She already has a nice assortment of glass and rather than put her expensive lenses at peril, I decided to pick up the YN50. They now use a dark blue film with a visible tab that makes it obvious that you should remove prior to use ;). I'm extremely satisfied with the AF performance of this unit. I didn't expect it to work as well as it does for such a low price point. In MF mode the manual action is pretty smooth. Not as smooth as my wife's fixed lens but at 1/10 the price I can easily forgive the YN50. Bang for buck it's hard to beat. This sample was taken indoors without flash (ISO 1600)

For the price you pay, this is an amazing lens. I do not regret my purchase at all, although slightly loud when it comes to auto focus noise while recording, this lens is top notch for only being $53. I much rather stick to manual focus but if you use auto focus then it might be a tad bit slow, but even then it's not a deal breaker. If you're looking into buying a prime lens but you're on a budget or if you just want to try out a lens before making a bigger investment then this is the best choice especially if you're just branching out into prime lenses.

So in terms of usage for me, it’s really awesome for the price! I’m pretty beginner at photography and use it for headshots of haircuts I had completed for my portfolio. It serves its purpose without breaking your wallet! I also took it to a concert recently and got some really nice shots even not being right near the stage. The quality is excellent! I was by no means looking to spend hundreds of dollars to invest in lenses as I don’t have a desire to dive into photography too much, so this was a perfect buy!

This prime lens is perfect if you're like me - a hobby photographer or a mama who is constantly chasing around a toddler! I use this lens in conjunction with my Canon T5 camera, and so far it does not disappoint! I didn't have the funds to purchase the name brand Canon competitor of this lens, but this one works exactly as I had hoped and imagined. I am able to lower the f/stop for those perfect blurry background shots (or for hiding the messy house in the background... whichever) and also provides me with so much better lighting in our dungeon of a home. It is easy to snap on and off the front of the camera for a quick lens change if need be. I like the compact size so I will probably be packing this to take with us on our trip to London later this year. It does have the stabilization button on the lens, just like it's more expensive Canon cousin. Overall I am very happy with this lens and what I use it for, and thanks to clarity and beautiful photos it snaps, our daughter will definitely never be short on photos.

This lens was my first foray into prime lens. When I bought it I couldn't figure out why anyone would want a 'prime lens'. This lens changed my mind and really upped my photo game! I took the lens on several trips, and it unfortunately broke. You can hear a rattle inside the lens and it is now stuck in an out of focus position. I have reached out to the company, but I am not holding my breath that it will be fixed or replaced under the warranty. I am still recommending this as an entry-level lens for newer photographers. It takes significantly better photos than your kit lens. Sadly, it is a little too delicate for me.

Am new at photography and have an older Canon XTI. Currently have a kit 18-55 and 5-250 with the lowest f at 3.5. I've wanting a 50mm at a fairly lower price since I'm just starting out and on a budget. Was looking at this and comparing to maybe a used Canon. I'm incredibly glad that I got this! the pictures attached are right out of the box. It is definitely made in good quality and surprising at how much it is. There IS a plastic film on both ends you have to remove before use. I can see how the autofocus would be loud for video, but for pictures it's perfect! The main reason I wanted this lens was the F1.8. I wanted to get specific focus and blurs (i think its called bokeh) for a two shoots i have lined up. Definitely see how people keep this lens as their main walk around lens. All the pictures attached are un-edited and varied in light (indoor and outdoor); converted from RAW to JPEG at highest quality and no flash used. It came next day and packaged very well. Would absolutely buy this again and recommend to everyone.

I have owned this lens for about a month and taken around 500 shots with it. It is not as good as its direct competitor, Canon's Nifty Fifty. It is not as sharp. The chroma is about the same or ever so slightly worse than the Nifty Fifty. On a tight budget or as a backups backup, it is good to have this. It's fifty bucks. I wish it were as sharp as Canon's budget offering. I would get several of these. As it stands, I'll stick with one and reacquire a Canon or Sigma fifty. It remains to be seen if Yongnuo used the same internal design as Canon which will mean that little plastic focus backstop will start breaking off in these as it ALWAYS eventually does in the Canon. We'll see. A good decently sharp lens at half the price of its direct competitor is a great deal.

I purchased this lens primarily as a cost effective low light lens, and for that the F:1.8 is nice. The focus is considerably noisier and slower than any of my Canon lenses. The perspective on my Canon Rebel T6 is the same as my vision, i.e. the view through viewfinder is identical to the one through my eye not looking through the viewfinder. For the price I think it is a great deal, even if I likely won't use it as much as the stock 18-55mm F:3.3 zoom when shooting in this range. When mounted the lens extends about (measured without filter)) 1 5/16" (4 cm) from the camera body.

My copy is moderately sharp wide open and has a really nice bokeh. Build quality is similar to the older Canon "nifty-fifty", which is to say flimsy plastic. Sturdy enough, I suppose. But considering this lens is about $50, and the image quality is very similar to the Canon (non-STM), it's a really hard to beat value, especially for beginners wanting to get a taste for prime lenses or as a nice cheap all-around option for a second or third SLR body. I think the newer Canon 50mm f/1.8 (STM version) is a better lens, but it's 2.5x the cost of the Yongnuo. For budget shooting, there probably isn't a better lens than this one. My only gripe (so far) is that the lens is shipped from the factory with plastic static stickers on both front and rear elements, and they are difficult to remove without tweezers. This opens up an opportunity to scratch or otherwise mar the front or back lens elements before you even get to use it. I'm all for protection during packing and shipping, but they should have made the protective plastic easier to remove.

I'm no professional photographer, but still wanted to create, so I got this. Since I was learning photography while using this, it fit my needs well. It had an autofocus when I was having trouble manual focusing, and the manual focusing was easy to use. Now that my tastes have refined a little, this lens definitely has some flaws. It's autofocus can be a little soft, and it has trouble with focusing closely. Even more, compared to some nicer, but still relatively budget lenses, this isn't very sharp. If you don't plan on doing tons of photography, are just taking family photos, or starting out photography and want to try a new lens but don't make enough money for much else, this lens should be good for you. I've been shooting on a crop sensor, so this lens is better for portraits for me, but I've created all kinds of fun photos with it.

I've held off for some time, wanting to skip the Canon 50mm 1.8 and put the money towards the 1.4 instead. But when I read a review about this lens, seeing that it was pretty much identical to the Canon, yet costing a third less (which is nice) but more importantly, having a 7 bladed aperture as opposed to the Canon's 5 blade, I decided to pick it up. So far, it seems to focus and work well, although I'll admit, the autofocus noise shocked me. (My other lenses have all been STM models, and I haven't experienced the standard USM Canon lenses yet.) But I don't ever plan on shooting video with it, and the bokeh in photos will look far nicer due to the 7 blades. I consider this to be a better buy over the Canon model, as far as the 50mm 1.8 is concerned.
