My main reason for getting this IR temperature gun was for checking the surface temperatures in my reptile’s vivarium’s (Bearded Dragon, Corn Snake and Geko) and its perfect for this and by far the most accurate and easy method for making these spot check and when setting up new viv’s. It requires one 9v battery which is included, then simply press the trigger and aim the red laser at the surface that you want to read the temperature of, the reading is “live“ whilst the trigger is pressed so the reading on the display will change as you move the red dot to different areas which is great for checking for hot/cold spots on surfaces, then on realising the trigger the current reading is fixed and shown on the display. There are 3 buttons below the display the first one switches the laser pointer on and off, the second switches the measurement between Celsius and Fahrenheit and the third switches the back light on the display on and off. This is a cheap and accurate way of taking temperature measurements from many surfaces, it has so many uses it would be impossible to list them all. Have to add my cats think it’s a great toy and go mad chasing the laser around!

This thermometer has done the job I bought it for, to find cold spots in our house. I searched our house for draughts prior to getting this item without success but within a few minutes using the GM550 I had identified several cold spots. This thermometer seems to be fairly accurate around room temp. but below freezing point it is a long way out. I took it outside on a frosty morning when my out door thermometer was at -1.2 C. and I was getting readings around -13 C. As the product description says (Measurement Range: Between -50 °C and 550 °C) but (Operating Temperature: Between 0°C and 40°C) maybe the unit would not be accurate as the operating temp was below freezing. I then went to the deep freeze opened the lid and aimed the device in the freezer, I got readings between -35 C and -37 C. When I took items from the freezer and tested them I got reading from -30 to -35 C. I have tested temp in deep freeze and it is showing -18.7 C. I have not had the opportunity to test at high temp yet but did test on boiling kettle aand got reading of 60 C but as this is a polished surface I did not expect an accurate result. So beware of accuracy of this item.

I've cooked my best fish and chips ever thanks to this, OK and some nifty home made batter and great maris piper spuds, but getting the oil at the right temps was crucial and this baby sure helped me there, and the wife's belly came in at a cool 35.4c too, and the fridge was a good 4c too, and the radiaters were giving off 20c , and heck you get the idea, it does what it says on the box/advert/tin perfectly. Unless i need another to check its not lying, but those chips were so good I don't think it was! Wish I had a cat to annoy with the laser....

I'm really impressed with this thermometer. Its amazing how technology has progressed. For less than a tenner, I now have a device that not only gives an instant temperature reading of any object from a distance, but also includes a built in laser pointer to show you exactly what you are pointing at. We tested it calibration by using a conventional thermometer in a cup of coffee, then comparing the reading to this infrared alternative and it was spot on. It couldn't be easier to use either, just pull the trigger and wait for the bleep (2 seconds max) and it displays the reading. We have been using it to find the source of a cold draught in our ancient kitchen - just keep the trigger pulled and sweep the device around the room, and when it encounters a sudden change in temperature it beeps. Brilliant - let's hope it lasts!

I bought this to ensure the temperature in my Tortoises terrarium was accurate. I took it to work and set up 3 magnetic , calibrated temperature gauges we use on the railway to ascertain Rail temperature. Left them sat for 20 mins to ensure correct temperature. Then scanned the surface area next those with this. Was extremely happy to see the reading was practically the same ( maybe 0.1 or 0.2 of a degree difference - making out point of a degree on the railway used Ones is hard , nigh on impossible unless it's digital. ) So in conclusion I can say that this is a superb item for a great price . I'm happy and confident that I'm getting a genuine reading with this device.

For the price? Compared to the other available products of this ilk? Superb! Solid build, feels comfortable and robust in the hand. Having immediately disassembled it to remove the Piezo beeper (I hate beeping things that beep every time you use them - a 'turn off beep' setting would have been icing on the cake) I can attest that the build is good, tidy circuit boards and components, with good soldering on the joints. I then scanned the inside face of every external wall of my bungalow, every ceiling of every room, and every external wall, window, gable end and roof apex to get a 'heat map' of my property. The results were consistent (I repeated samples to be sure), proving the equipment is reliable. Whether it's 100% accurate is unknown, but I just needed to see any stand out hot-spots on the property itself.

This IR pistol-grip thermometer is excellent. Its LCD screen is viewable from ALL angles - cheap LCD digits disappear at odd angles. The illumination of the screen is even - it isn't lit from the top, the side or the bottom. The screen is nice and flush with the handset - it isn't inset - so it's easy to wipe clean. Nor are there any buttons under it to get in the way. The unit also feels nice in the hand. The ergonomics are good. It is weighted in the handle due to the battery and this feels right. The laser is also powerful AND 'shoots' straight. I have tested this 'meter against things of known temperature and it is accurate. This looks better than more expensive units on the market and I bet it is just as accurate, just like a £10 quartz watch is as accurate as a £100 one. You can also switch between lights on or off and Fahrenheit to Celcius with a discreet button near the battery in the handle. Oh, and I also now know that I like my coffee at EXACTLY 52.0C.

Having difficulties getting a hot water bottle at just the right temperature, so decided to buy this item. Now the temperature can be checked and adjusted as neccessary without the risk of being too hot or cold. A great addition to my arsenal of equipment. I have often wondered what temperature my freezer runs at, now I can check the temp and be reassured it is performing correctly and my food stuff is safe. I imagine there are many more uses for this piece of equipment, as yet to be found. Highly recommended even for a 'bit of fun gift' for the inqusitive amongs us.

Absolutely great piece of kit at a bargain price. It sometimes takes a couple of seconds to register a different temperature, but if the trigger is held while moving between the two spots that delay doesn't seem to apply. The laser guide helps to make it easier to know what you are measuring, although if you are very close to the surface that you are testing then you should be aware that the actual spot being measured is about 1cm below the red dot. There is not much in my house that hasn't been shot and temperature-checked!

I bought this primarily to use in the kitchen, but also partly just out of curiosity as to how good it could actually be. I’ve found it to be very accurate within the temperature range I’ve used it in (around 20-200°C) when compared with my independently calibrated thermocouple. You just point and pull the trigger and you get the temperature reading to within 0.1°C on the screen. The screen has a backlight which can be turned on or off as can the laser guide. It’s worth pointing out that the temperature reading is for a circle of an increasing diameter depending on the distance you are from the object you're taking the reading from. This is at a ratio of roughly 12:1, so if you’re 90cm from an object then the temperature reading you receive is for a 7.5cm diameter circle, centred on the red laser point. I’ve found it great for checking oven/pan temperatures, the heat of food before serving and also really useful for checking the temperature of sugar when making caramel, nougat and marshmallows. One thing that I have found is that if you’re using this in the kitchen and steam gets onto the lens of the thermometer then the readings you get are not very accurate, not ideal if you’re trying to heat a ban of water to a specific temperature, but in the same way it’s not a big problem as it’s easy enough to give the lens a quick wipe. Overall I have to say that I'm very happy with this thermometer, it’s very well built and accurate, I’d thought it was going to be a bit of a gimmick when I bought it, but instead I now find myself using it all the time and relying on it.

The build on this thermometer is surprisingly good. The device is well constructed and operates well. The plastic has a silky textured feel, and all of the panels fit together without gaps, or sharp seams. (a surprise for such a cheap model!) It measures temperatures as accurately as it states, and comes with both a battery and a belt holder. The laser is a nice touch, but you need to remember when taking a reading that the heat sensor is BELOW the red dot, not directly on it. You might think this is a bad design, but again - good design shines through. The laser beam is not angled downward into the heat sensors line of sight, not because it would change the reading, but because the laser-to-sensor offset would depend on how far away the sensor was from the item being measures. It's much easier to keep the laser dot/sensing area the same distance apart, and then it's constant no matter how far from the item being sensed is. All together a great device, and an even better price!

This is an instrument which deserves more popularity as it has so many applications. I don't think people are aware of its potential. The laser pointer beam makes it easy to select the object being measured if it is small. To make a reading all that is needed is to point and quickly press the trigger. The pistol action and the screen on the back are really ergonomic. There is a beep when the reading is ready and the LED lights the screen for a few seconds. One should wait for the light to go out before pressing the trigger again. Three buttons are available to control the laser beam, centigrade/fahrenheit selection and the screen light as well as the trigger, which measures continuously if kept pressed (scan) or almost instantaneously if released quickly, holding the reading for a few seconds. The beeps indicate that the measurement is finished before reading the temperature. Applications are to measure surface temperatures. Liquids such as tea, soup read lower than solids at the same temperature. Wall temperature is generally lower than air temperature if the air is being used to warm the room. The ground temperature is also always lower than air temperature. However, since the readings use very little current from the 9-volt battery in the handle, you soon develop a feeling for establishing the average through several measurements. Ideal for setting up thermostats to economise on heating without freezing, finding cold spots caused by draughts or inadequate insulation, to measure food temperature before serving and during cooking in oven or microwave. In conjunction with a count-down timer makes cooking in micro-wave or re-heating very reliable. Is it cold outside? Just open window, point and read. Brilliant!

Excellent for checking temperatures nice easy to use, battery lasts ages!. I used this to check my house for drafts and temperature fluctuations, i'm sure there are plenty of other uses but I bought this to check a loft conversion as it was cold and it did identify where one whole wall portion was missing insulation so for the £20 cost it's saved me a bomb on heating , all because it was quite awkward for the builders to crawl along to push the insulation around the side of the conversion! it also identified one velux that needed extra insulation strips. It's particularly useful during the winter.

I bought this last Christmas to help with cooking a turkey in an unfamiliar oven, a task it performed admirably. It snowed, too, which allowed me to have a few minutes of fun outside. Snow is hardly the textbook black-body radiator, and I expected failure but again, it performed admirably. Since then it has proved useful in preparing tinctures in Kilner jars, balancing temperatures on exhaust manifolds and checking the chimney on my log burner to make sure it wasn't going to go all Three Mile Island on me. Note that there are similar-looking models of this at different prices. This has an extended upper range and I chose it because of the chimney work. Okay, a budget tool but it performs well, within expected parameters. If you're a wood stove owner, get one. MUCH better than a chimney-fitting thermometer

I had wanted to get one of these for a while, I wish i had got it sooner. I initially used this to find out cold spots around the house and to see how the heat moved from one place to another, it's given me a mental heat map of my house, really useful. I think after that I tested the temperature on just about everything, sad I know but I love it ;) I have used it with cooking the most since the fad part of it died off but it's still used regularly and it has not been relegated to division shelf. Readout is clear and by all accounts accurate, a satisfying beep-beep to indicate a reading and a laser guide to mark your spot. Kids loved this too, checking temp's of this and that, just be careful they don't point it in anybody's eyes etc. Laser could damage them.

The item arrived on time, so that was great. The day it arrived I immediately started checking the temperature on literally everything I could see, and it was fun. I haven't really done anything useful with it yet, though. I have been wondering about the item's accuracy, but i haven't had the chance to measure something with this and another thermometer. I was surprised to see that when I let my oven heat up to "200 C" the thermometer told me that the plate in the middle of my oven was 240 C, so now I want to get a second thermometer and see if that's accurate. I do, however, believe what the thermometer says more than what my decades old oven says. Anyway, feels sturdy, battery was included and given that it reads temperatures accurately, this is definitely a 5 star item, especially at this price.

The main benefit if these devices is the zero contact measurement. It would be useful if you could shut off the beep as you can with the laser pointer, it can be very annoying. Actual accuracy at close range is good, but depends on the surface to be measured. Shiny surfaces require a bit of masking tape or similar to get a good reading I would recommend this supplier happily to anyone looking to buy a thermometer of this type. Delivery time was ok considering the distance, so leave plenty of time. Very good value for money .

I have given this Item 4 stars as it is ideal for the use to which I am putting it however I am unsure as to its accuracy. I bought the Item to measure the inside temperature of a wood fired pizza oven so that I can gauge the temperature for cooking pizza, roasting meat, andf baking bread all at different temperatures. I only need an accuracy of +/- 20 to 30 deg and the temp range of up to 550 deg is plenty. This it achieves no problem. If you wanted really good accuracy, +/- 1 to 2 deg then I am not sure how well it would cope. It also seems to be quite sensitive to the distance from the surface being measured as well. It arrived on time and considering its price it feels well made and sturdy. It really feels like it should cost a lot more.

I'm sure im not the only one whose first job with this was to go around the house 'shooting' the walls / windows / bath / fish tank / kettle to test their temperatures?! I expected this to be a bit cheap and nasty but it is really nice in the hand with soft rubbery coating on the plastic. Supremely easy to use (once you get a 9v battery) - just point and shoot. The laser pointer is useful so you know you're testing the right thing. Seems fairly accurate. Only bought really to muck about with and check for cold spots in the house. Only thing i would say is that it would be nice to have a bag or some sort of case or even a hanging loop as it is liable to get damaged chucked in a drawer / shelf somewhere.
