No, it can be attached to your accessory shoe or off camera on your own 6' stand or mini stand

When i ordered this light it said it would take up to two weeks to arrive, i was bummed but had read so many good things i was willing to wait. To my surprise it only took 3 days to arrive! I do some video work for a Radio Station and I mostly do some interview stuff with it.I bought it because im working on a small documentary right now and my early footage was just too dark. This little sucker puts out a MASSIVE amount of light for its size, and its absolutely fantastic. As soon as i get a chance i will post some test footage of it but i can not say enough nice things about this light, its small compact and light weight. I also use it when i self tape video auditions, my agent says that my videos looks great with it. I attached a photo of it mounted on my Canon T3i with a Rode VidMic on one of the cold shoe mounts around the edges of it. Its also nice to have around when the power goes out as the battery has a decent time, right around 4 hours I believe, but im using a Sony rechargeable battery M, and this thing is OLD. I would recommend this light to anyone doing any kind of run and Gun shooting. I know that I'll be using it for my next 48hr Film fest whenever that may be.

What a great light for video. You can dial the power to light your subject. Using mine on the camera, but you can easily mount it to a stand, so instead of direct light, you can have light to one side. Flat (direct) is not the best for portraiture, but for lighting a room its great. I like you can mount your shotgun mic or another light, because the H198 (198 LED's) on each to on of the 3 other cold shoe slides. This is a great all around light sure to add to your videos indoor and out. Nice it can use AA's or Sony NPF type battery packs. I picked up the 570 pack because the 750, I thought were too heavy for on camera. Mine fits inside my camera backpack bag, although it does come with a nice bag, don't want to carry extra bags though.

I've only had these lights for a couple of days, so here are my initial thoughts. Nice packaging. I like the case and accessories. It includes a diffusion and tungsten filter - these snap on to plastic register pins on the front face of the light. I would have preferred magnetic mounts, but these are still better than the slide in type, so long as the pins hold up. Not a big issue for me. It also comes with a mini ball head - cheap like others I've received in similar kits. I probably won't use it. A little plastic "foot" is included with the unit which is used to connect multiple units. It also makes the unit mountable on any hot/cold shoe adapter like those found on umbrella adapters. But more important to me is that it's tapped with a metal 1/4-20 making this universally riggable. That was one of the primary unknowns based on the description and pictures of the product on Amazon. I'm pleasantly surprised at the solution provided. I only wish it came with extra "feet" or that they were available for sale separately. Light output seems on par with the Switronix Torch LED as indicated by a previous reviewer, though I'd have to test them side my side to confirm. Light color quality is pretty awesome - we have turned a major corner here. Based on the white balance eye dropper in Aperture, I'm reading 4954k and 0 shift in tint (green vs. magenta). That's compared to 5176k and 22 point magenta shift that the F&V R300 produces (which is ok, as those ring lights are now used to light up my green screen, so the green bias works fine). Update 3/10/15 - I did manage to find an AC power supply that works here on Amazon. The Neewer® CN-AC2 DC 7.5V 2A Switching Power Supply Adapter for Video Light CN-160 CN-126 has a dummy NP-F style battery plate and a 7.4V wall-wart transformer. As a switching power supply, I can use it internationally with the right plug adapter (no need for step down transformer). Now, if I have access to AC power, I can run the lights all day long and not worry about batteries, though the battery option is still there if I need it. Original review: I do wish this unit had an input for an AC power supply, though I bought these largely because of the AA battery option for a compact international travel kit. With a fresh set of Eneloop NiMH batteries, I feel comfortable planning for 30 minutes of shoot time with this light. Up to about 35 minutes, there is a very gradual drop off of light. Around 35 minutes, the light output drops suddenly by about half and slowly declines from there. I probably ought to do a similar test at half power as well as with a Sony NP-F970 type battery, of which I have quite a few. I have three other units I need to QA, but I think these have found a place in my lighting kit.

I liked that you can adjust the white balance, but way to bright (on the lowest setting) and bulky for what I need it for. (Yes you could use gels to lower the intensity, but not interested in that) Not to mention if your going to run this on regular double A's, forget it! Unless your shots are short and to the point. Otherwise I'm sure its a great light, it seem to work perfectly well, but alas, I returned it, and will stick with Lume Cube for my current needs. I would not hesitate however to recommend this light for someone in need of the bigger size (and low price range), just know your going to need the big battery to run it, or at least rechargeable batteries.

While there have been many knockoffs of this light there is no doubt the real Aputure version is still the best. It is incredibly bright for an on-camera light while also being able to be dimmed and diffused with included panels. For low budget filmmakers like myself, it is the workhorse of a good, cost efficient lighting kit. It is far brighter than any clamp-lamps, does not heat up, and most importantly it is battery powered so you are able to shoot in areas without any electrical outlets. It comes in a surprisingly high quality padded carrying case along with a nice all metal tripod mount. For the money this is certainly the best on-camera LED light panel you can buy (and it is so good it can even be used as a small key or fill light!).

I purchased two on the first round and after using with a different light that I had already I went ahead and purchased a third one. The 3 or 4 year old batteries I own didn't last very long. I switch them out with AA batteries and that worked great...until the new DSTE® 2x NP-F970 Battery + DC01 arrive. These lights are very bright and you can adjust them to your needs. Small, light and easy to handle. Very convenient plus you get real daylight for less that $55 per unit. Good for tight shots and super light for traveling.

I have to say that i absolutly love this light! I can't stress it enough that this Light is great for the price you pay for it. I found this light through Ryan Connolly from Film Riot, This light I have only used it very little since i got it about a week ago. and this light has helped me out amazingly for not only my video shoots but it has also made my post production great by how you can adjust the light from a "Warm Tone" of light to a "Cool Tone" of light "WITHOUT ANY GELS" & how bright you can make light go to help you film in super dark places. Also with how bright this light can go using six "Double A Batteries" or using the "Sony NP-F550 Digital Camera Battery" & or "Generic Replacement for Sony NP-F550 Digital Camera Battery" all of that sidei have to stress that this light when used in the right setting and place and when you bring it into post it will make you're Editing alot easier to color correct & color grading you're footage

I had previously been using the far more expensive Switronix TorchLED Bolt. The Bolt's color knob broke after several months of gentle use and the unit failed to power on shortly thereafter. Having just received the Amaran AL-H198, long-term durability remains to be seen, but I was pleasantly surprised by how nicely it matched the Bolt's build quality and light output. Seems more than adequate for my on-the-fly documentary needs. Plus, I absolutely love the soft carry case and battery options. Very happy with this purchase. I plan to purchase more soon!

Bought this to use for stills photography, I mounted this on a go pro stick and worked pretty good. Light is SUPREMELY beautiful!! it's 95 CRI so I expected this and that's why I bought. Two downsides, first the light is not as powerful as I expected due to the bicolor option, I probably would buy the version at 5500K so I can use more power and add a gel. The second problem is the Metal ball-head Swivel Mount is a great addition, but one of the ends is already loose I can't tighten anymore. Not sure why that's happening. To the manufacturer I say this ball head is an excellent feature and well designed however the edges of the square plate near bottoms are too sharp, maybe enough to cut so I would recommend softening the edges. Thank you!!

A great on-camera light for those who are going to be filming BTS footage, or event footage that has a more first-person feel to it. I don't recommend this light by itself as the end-all for those who want to do more cinematic applications. Rather, this should be considered a "video flash", that allows you to show viewers what's going on in a dark scene, without being very artistic.

Love the light. I bought this after watching an episode of Film Riot. Really bright and can be placed behind subjects and hidden very well to help separate them from the background. I'm going to order the bigger versions for my productions. I bought this with the battery packs and charger. This is one of the cheapest lights you can buy that are up there with professional lighting.
