I think it was much better at providing task lighting than my flash because the bones would have otherwise either been blown-out by the flash or there would have been deep shadows from bouncing the flash off the ceiling. It was incredibly useful as a fill light when I was shooting macro outdoors and indoors with other room lighting - esp. since my macro lens fit nicely inside the opening of the ring flash.
