Well at least it works sort of ! After designing such an elaborate system, the owners spent maybe 10 minutes writing the instructions. So I had to spend my valuable time playing the "guess-game" to figure out where the parts belong. Good thing there is a picture of this unit on the website so I could refer to it while assembling it. The clock, the temperature the alarm all work. The date I'm not so sure of ? It displays a number between 2 dashes ? It could be the IC is faulty, or I installed it wrong. In any case, there are NO trouble-shooting instructions. The good thing is that it came with extra parts(resistors) which is unusual. The LED display is very bright and it does not need any batteries to work. However without the battery it means that when power is cut off, you have to reset all your settings, something I'm still having problems trying to understand ? Maybe you might do better...

Pretty easy to assemble the components. Worked ok first time. Easy to set up. Instructions were ok, needed reading few times. Resistors were labeled so easy to identify. Date setup needed month, day and then day of the week (not week). The day of the week is a number 1 to 7. I used 1 for Monday. The case was a big puzzle. Used the pictures in the Tomtop ad to help a little. A diagram of the location of the pieces would be a great help. I found that taking off the case top and back together then the 5v end was the best way of getting the internals in and out.

I do a lot of hobby electronics projects as a maker / tinkerer but just bought a new soldering iron and wanted to test it out a bit on something tangible without having to dream up an actual project so saw this as a bit of fun and a great way to try my new iron out. All the bits arrived complete which is always a good start. For the most part this clock was very easy to build and actually quite relaxing felt a bit like a Lego set from when I was a kid. However the instructions at certain points were not very clear and I very nearly got a few components mixed up so could easily trip a novice up. All the electronics bit was completed in about 45 minutes. Powered it up and all worked well then it was on to the plastic case...... the case was very frustrating and could have used a extra pair of hands trying to get it all together. The joints were held together with impossibly tiny screws and nuts which were very fiddly eventually after I am sure the best part of a hour I finally got the case done. I can't believe how fiddly it was and was tempted more than once to use some" gentle persuasion" with a hammer! I had that much fun building it (apart from the case) I actually went looking for more kits as it was a bit of relaxing fun. Would definitely be a good kit for a novice although perhaps not their very first kit as there is well over 100 solder joints to complete and iffy in places instructions. Given all the components and the "delightful" plastic case and the fact that you get a fully functional alarm clock with a large display and temperature function and it's blue as opposed to red I feel that it's actually really good value for money. I have deducted a start however due to the less from perfect instructions and also for the mind melting case.

Had great fun assembling this kit. Circuit assembly is probably intermediate level. Nothing advanced but anyone with a little knowledge of electronics and a steady soldering hand can easily put the components on the board. The instructions are reasonably clear as long as you understand circuit diagrams for the odd bits of info the wording leaves out. The reason this gets 4 stars and not 5 is simply because the casing was an absolute pain to put together and is by no means solid. I'd be afraid to let a child look at my assembled clock in case the case came apart lets put it that way. I had to glue the base a little bit just to make it more rigid as some of the edges that meet other surfaces when pulled by the screw and bolt, are not perfectly flat and pull the case out of shape slightly. Anyway, for the money I would recommend this highly. Use a low heat iron or temp controlled unit.
