      I bought this to keep tabs on an empty house while it was waiting to be sold. The instructions are just not good enough. I finally figured out that I had to install the SIM in a phone first in order to set the SIM card up properly. Once you install it in the unit, you're better off contacting a fortune teller to know if you've got good signal reception or not. When it did have an adequate cell signal, yes it would call and let me know of an alarm status. Also, I could call it and hear (barely) if anything was going on in the house. This is bare-bones; you get a black box, with a sensor and a place to put the SIM card; beyond that, you're on your own. You can find some helpful info on the web about this item.
